Three-time PDC World Championship winner Michael van Gerwen advanced to the semi-finals after defeating unseeded Callan Rydz in an exceptional 5-3 match at Alexandra Palace. The third-seeded Dutchman, whose last world title came in 2019, will face Chris Dobey in the semi-finals following an impressive performance that featured a 103.1 average.
The quarter-final showcased remarkable scoring from both players, with Rydz hitting 17 180s throughout the contest. The match remained close as Rydz twice leveled after Van Gerwen took the lead, before falling behind 4-2 and briefly rallying back. Despite Rydz’s higher average of 103.88 and 46.15% success rate on doubles, Van Gerwen’s 44.74% checkout percentage proved sufficient for victory.
The quality of play peaked from the fifth set onward, with both players maintaining averages above 103.59. Van Gerwen even lost the seventh set despite an outstanding 111.67 average. “To be part of games like this always gives you a lot of joy. It’s probably one of my best performances in a long time,” Van Gerwen remarked to Sky Sports.
In the other quarter-final, Chris Dobey overcame a two-set deficit to defeat 2021 champion Gerwyn Price 5-3, reaching his first World Championship semi-final. Despite having five darts to win 5-2, Dobey maintained his composure after a brief stumble to secure victory with an impressive double-double finish on 18s.
The remaining quarter-finals will feature teenage sensation Luke Littler against Nathan Aspinall, while Stephen Bunting faces two-time champion Peter Wright.
