The United States military conducted a series of air strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen overnight, targeting multiple locations across the country.
The bombing campaign hit areas near the capital Sanaa and throughout the northern province of Saada early Tuesday, continuing military operations that began in mid-March. According to Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV, US forces launched 15 raids on Saada province, including the city of Saada and the districts of Majz and Sahar. Reports indicated Mount Nabi Shuaib in the Bani Matar district of Sanaa province was also targeted.
No immediate casualty reports emerged from Tuesday’s strikes, though the Houthis claim that at least 61 people have been killed in Yemen since US bombardments intensified on March 15.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) released two videos on social media showing fighter jets taking off and missiles being launched from an aircraft carrier as part of the operation.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed the rebels successfully targeted a US drone with “a suitable locally manufactured missile,” though this assertion has not been independently verified.
While the United States and Israel maintain that Iran is supplying weapons to the Houthis, citing Iranian-manufactured weapons found on the battlefield, Tehran denies arming the Yemeni rebels.
The US military campaign began after Houthis threatened to resume attacks on shipping vessels in the Red Sea, which they linked to Israel’s restrictions on aid entering Gaza. From November 2023 until January, the Houthis targeted more than 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones, resulting in two ships sunk and four sailors killed. They have also launched attacks aimed at US warships, though none have been hit.
President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to both the Houthis and Iran on Monday through his Truth Social platform, claiming the Yemeni group has “been decimated” by the ongoing air strikes. “Many of their Fighters and Leaders are no longer with us,” Trump wrote. “We hit them every day and night – Harder and harder. Their capabilities that threaten Shipping and the Region are rapidly being destroyed. Our attacks will continue until they are no longer a threat to Freedom of Navigation.”
The United States has not yet responded to the Houthis’ claim about downing a drone.
