A special bond typically exists between footballing brothers – a mixture of love, loyalty, and competitive rivalry, especially when they’re twins. This dynamic plays out in the Roshn Saudi League, which has featured multiple brothers and twins sharing the pitch.
At Al Qadsiah, Qassem Lajami isn’t the only player with a twin competing elsewhere in the league. On Wednesday night in Dammam, Mohammed Abu Al Shamat will face brother Saleh when Al Qadsiah meets Eastern Province rivals Al Khaleej in Matchweek 29.
This marks their second confrontation this season, following their Matchweek 12 meeting in late November at the same Prince Mohammed Bin Fahd Stadium. In that encounter, Mohammed claimed bragging rights with a 1-0 victory, though their direct confrontation was brief – the twins shared the pitch for just six minutes before Mohammed was substituted in the 81st minute for Abdulaziz Al Othman, who ironically scored the winning goal.
In the upcoming fixture, Saleh will be seeking revenge – a result that could damage Al Qadsiah’s top-four ambitions.
Despite their rivalry, both 22-year-old twins have impressed for their respective clubs this season. Mohammed played a crucial role in Al Qadsiah’s promotion last season, earning a long-term contract through 2029. Manager Michel clearly recognizes his potential and versatility.
Primarily deployed as a right-back this season, Mohammed has been integral to Al Qadsiah’s league-best defense, which has conceded only 25 goals in 28 matches. He ranks second at the club for tackles and fourth for clearances, while also providing offensive contributions – his five assists trail only Cameron Puertas (six) at Al Qadsiah. Mohammed also scored his first top-flight goal in a crucial 1-1 draw against rivals Al Ettifaq.
Saleh, meanwhile, has contributed one goal and three assists for Al Khaleej. Despite starting just 10 of his 24 league appearances, he ranks third at the club for both chances created and “big chances” created. Notably, Al Khaleej has never lost when Saleh has scored or assisted – his contributions proved decisive in wins against Al Fateh (2-1), Al Orobah (3-0), and Al Okhdood (2-1), plus a 2-2 draw with Al Ahli.
Undoubtedly, Saleh will be aiming to double his goal tally on Wednesday. While every contribution matters, scoring against his brother Mohammed would carry special significance, particularly if it helps his 10th-placed side climb into the league’s top half.
