Trump Claims Bill Gates Seeks Mar-a-Lago Meeting, Following Tech Industry’s Post-Election Pivot

Article arrow_drop_down

Former President and President-elect Donald Trump announced on social media that Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has requested to meet with him at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. Trump shared this information in a Truth Social post on Friday morning, also mentioning plans for New Year’s Eve, though he didn’t provide additional details about the potential meeting.

This development is notable because Gates has previously been critical of Trump, especially regarding his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic during his first presidency. Gates also supported Trump’s opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, in the 2024 election with a $50 million donation to a nonprofit supporting her campaign. However, Gates did publicly congratulate Trump after his November 5 election victory.

The potential meeting follows a pattern of major tech industry figures engaging with Trump following his election victory. Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently visited Trump at Mar-a-Lago, and several major tech companies have made significant donations to Trump’s inaugural fund:

  • Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook): $1 million
  • Amazon: $1 million
  • Uber Technologies: $1 million

Ferry Services Resume After Six Weeks of Disruption, But Delays Hit Holyhead Reopening

Ferry services to and from Holyhead Port have resumed after being disrupted for over six weeks due to damage sustained during Storm Darragh in early December. The storm caused significant damage to terminals 3 and 5 at the Welsh port, with terminal 5 operating on a temporary basis upon reopening.   The Irish Ferries ship WB Yeats arrived in Dublin Port from Holyhead this morning, marking the resumption of services. However, the initial restart was not without problems. Ger Hyland, President of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA), reported a three-hour delay for the second ferry from Dublin to Holyhead due to an electrical fault at the port. Hyland expressed concern about the port's readiness, citing the large backlog of freight on the Welsh side. He emphasized the potential for "huge disaster" for the haulage sector, passengers, and Ireland's imports […]

Conor McGregor Named in Civil Lawsuit Alleging Sexual Assault at NBA Finals

Conor McGregor, the mixed martial arts fighter and former UFC champion, is facing a civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault at the Kaseya Center (formerly FTX Arena and American Airlines Arena) in Miami during the NBA Finals on June 9, 2023. The plaintiff alleges that McGregor assaulted her in a bathroom at the venue and is seeking unspecified damages from both McGregor and the Miami Heat Limited Partnership, the arena's ownership group.   McGregor has denied the allegations through a spokesperson, dismissing them as a "shakedown." While the Miami Police Department initiated an investigation following a report filed on June 11, 2023, the Florida State Attorneyโ€™s Office declined to file criminal charges in October 2023. This declination does not preclude the pursuit of a civil suit, which has a different standard of proof than criminal proceedings.   The lawsuit also details […]

“US Gives Ukraine Peace Talks Final Deadline As Trump Threatens To Walk Away

The US will abandon efforts to broker a Russia-Ukraine peace deal within days unless clear progress emerges, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. "We're not going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end," Rubio stated, adding that the US had "other priorities to focus on." Russia, which launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has placed various conditions on potential ceasefire terms. Despite the Trump administration's initial confidence in securing a quick agreement, ceasefire attempts have stalled, with Washington attributing blame to both sides. Following discussions with European leaders in Paris on Thursday, Rubio told reporters: "We need to determine very quickly now - and I'm talking about a matter of days - whether or not this is doable." He emphasized, "If it's not going to happen, then we're just going to move […]

U.S. Strike on Yemen Fuel Port Results in Dozens of Casualties, According to Houthi Media

U.S. strikes on a fuel port in Yemen killed at least 58 people, according to Houthi-run Al Masirah TV, marking one of the deadliest attacks since the United States began its military campaign against the Iran-backed militants. The United States has stated it will not cease the large-scale strikes that began last monthโ€”its most significant military operation in the Middle East since President Donald Trump took office in Januaryโ€”unless the Houthis stop their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. Al Masirah TV reported that Thursday's strikes on the western fuel port of Ras Isa also resulted in 126 wounded. The U.S. military characterized the operation as an effort to cut off a fuel source for the Houthi militant group. When Reuters requested comment regarding the casualty figures reported by the Houthis and the U.S. military's estimate, U.S. Central Command […]

Minister Jack Chambers Questioned Over Past Planning Objections Despite Recent Housing Comments

Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers, who recently criticized planning objections based on "character of an area" concerns, is facing scrutiny over his past objection to a development that included apartments. This week, Chambers announced measures to accelerate infrastructure delivery. He stated that objections based on neighborhood character are "nebulous" and block housing supply goals. He claimed there are "countless examples" of people trying to "frustrate" housing development for the "broad public good." However, records show that in 2016, Chambers objected to a mixed-use Lidl development in Castleknock that included eight apartments. As a local TD then, he argued the project would "compromise and constrain the aesthetic and visual outlook" of the village. During an An Bord Pleanala hearing in 2017, he reportedly described the development as a "monstrosity" that "puts an atomic bomb under the conservation area." In his […]

Hard-Right Allies at Odds: Meloni’s Diplomatic Tightrope Between Trump and the EU

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni faced a delicate diplomatic challenge during her White House visit as she attempted to balance her ideological alignment with President Trump against her responsibilities to the European Union. The relationship between the United States and the EU has grown increasingly strained under Trump's administration. Meloni, part of a newer generation of hard-right European leaders with connections to the Trump administration, has cultivated a personal rapport with the president, who has described her as "a real live wire" and a "fantastic woman." Her anti-immigration stance aligns with Trump's policies, earning her a reputation as someone who can effectively communicate with him. Meloni's visit comes amid widespread international concern over Trump's global tariff policies. Initially imposing a 20% tax on all EU goods entering the United States, Trump later reduced this to a 10% blanket rate following […]

Judge Threatens Criminal Contempt Charges Against Trump Officials Over Deportations

A federal judge has indicated that Trump administration officials could face criminal contempt charges for allegedly violating his order to halt deportations of Venezuelan migrants accused of gang membership. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg in Washington found "probable cause" for criminal contempt charges, stating the administration showed "willful disregard" for his March 15 order that prohibited deporting alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act. Attorneys and relatives of many deportees claim they aren't gang members and were denied opportunities to challenge the government's allegations. The ruling represents the most significant judicial suggestion of potential punishment since President Trump returned to office on January 20, intensifying tensions between the judicial and executive branches. "It's a very strong rebuke to the administration and opens the door for further proceedings to determine who, in fact, disregarded the […]

US Congressional Watchdog to Investigate Changes at the SEC

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) will examine recent changes at the Securities and Exchange Commission, including those potentially influenced by the White House or Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), according to a letter sent to Democratic lawmakers. The GAO, Congress's nonpartisan research arm, informed Senators Elizabeth Warren and Mark Warner that it will review the SEC's recent efforts to reduce staff, terminate leases, and consolidate operations, as detailed in an April 8 letter viewed by Reuters. The lawmakers requested the investigation last month following media reports about DOGE's involvement and other significant changes at the market regulator. A. Nicole Clowers, managing director of GAO's congressional relations office, confirmed in the letter that the request "is within the scope of (GAO's) authority" and that work would commence in approximately three months. Since President Donald Trump took office and […]
