Germany is advocating for diplomatic negotiations between the European Union and the United States to prevent a potential trade conflict while maintaining readiness for retaliatory measures. The statement comes as EU trade ministers prepare for a virtual meeting.
The 27 EU trade ministers will convene online at 4 p.m. (1500 GMT) to address the United States’ planned implementation of 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, scheduled to take effect March 12.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has described the tariffs as unwarranted, indicating the EU will respond with “firm and proportionate” measures.
A European Union diplomat emphasized the importance of maintaining composure, noting the month-long window before the tariffs’ implementation.
German Economy Minister Robert Habeck, who will participate in the video conference, plans to stress unity among EU members and conflict prevention. His ministry stated that while negotiations with the US administration remain crucial, the EU must also demonstrate its preparedness for countermeasures, which the Commission has already indicated.
While specific countermeasures haven’t been detailed, the EU could reinstate its 2018 tariffs on products including bourbon, motorcycles, and orange juice, which were suspended during a temporary agreement between von der Leyen and former US President Joe Biden.
Though not the largest supplier of steel and aluminum to the United States, EU exports are significant. The US represents the second-largest market for EU steel, with annual exports averaging 3 billion euros ($3.10 billion) over ten years. Aluminum exports reached 2.4 billion euros in the first eleven months of 2024.
European Aluminium, an industry group, is urging immediate discussions between EU and US officials to resolve.
