Disturbing footage of a kidnapping and assault that took place in Sydney’s west nearly two years ago was played in court on Thursday, revealing the violent actions of four men, including the victim’s own brother-in-law.
The victim, Younis Younis, was targeted by Kodar Faytrouni, Safwan Hussein, Ali Hamad, and Abud Elkerdi, who traveled from Melbourne to Guildford to carry out the kidnapping. Faytrouni, the brother-in-law of Mr. Younis, orchestrated the plot, believing that Mr. Younis had married his sister solely to obtain an Australian visa.
The video evidence, recorded by Hamad, showed Hussein putting Mr. Younis in a headlock while Faytrouni sat beside him in the car. Further footage depicted Faytrouni physically assaulting Mr. Younis at his mother’s home. Mr. Younis was also taken to another property in Guildford.
The ordeal ended several hours later when police intercepted the attackers’ car. All four men have pleaded guilty to charges of kidnapping.
Judge Stephen Hanley, presiding over the case, rejected the defense’s argument that Faytrouni’s low intellect was to blame for the incident. The judge characterized the kidnapping as a planned and targeted attack motivated by Faytrouni’s disapproval of his sister’s choice of husband.
“It shows a complete failure to allow this woman to select who she wants to have as her partner,” Judge Hanley stated, condemning the attackers’ misogynistic attitudes.
The court heard that Faytrouni attributed his actions to a sense of responsibility towards his sister and his belief that her marriage was not genuine. However, the judge emphasized the severity of the offense, highlighting the distress caused to the victim and his family.
The sentencing of the four men has been adjourned until December. Faytrouni and Elkerdi’s cases were postponed after Elkerdi collapsed during a lunch break and was taken to the hospital. Hamad and Hussein are scheduled to appear in court again on December 13th.
