At age five, Oliver Bowerman was surprised when his parents announced they were moving to a cave. Rather than a Stone Age lifestyle, his family had purchased Stump Cross Caverns, a tourist attraction in Yorkshire Dales.
The Bowermans acquired the cave system in 2003 after responding to a newspaper ad describing it as a “once in a generation” opportunity. Originally discovered by lead miners in the 19th century, the caverns became a tourist site in 1926 under Septimus Wray’s ownership.
Now, 22 years later, Oliver is taking over management from his mother Lisa. After completing his psychology degree, he joined the family business, bringing fresh ideas including plans to open a new section previously accessible only to potholers.
“To be in a position to hand it over to somebody with such an amazing business brain and such a vision for the future, it’s quite exciting,” Lisa said, who will remain involved in education and creative aspects while Oliver leads business decisions.
Starting January, a two-year excavation project will begin to make the new cavern section publicly accessible. The expansion requires significant engineering work but will allow visitors to experience previously unseen chambers.
The unique family business has sparked interesting reactions over the years. “When I said ‘oh, we have a cave’, the look on people’s faces was quite interesting,” Oliver recalled of his university days.

Bolsonaro Supporters Rally Nationwide as Trump Sanctions Brazil Over Coup Trial
Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have demonstrated across major cities protesting the Supreme Court coup trial that could result in lengthy prison sentences for the former leader. According to testimony from a Brazilian general, the alleged plotters also planned to assassinate […]

Smithsonian Museum Quietly Removes Trump Impeachment Display Sparking Political Firestorm
The Smithsonian Institution has denied political influence in its decision to remove a display about President Donald Trump's impeachments from the National Museum of American History. The institution stated Saturday that it removed the "temporary" placard for failing to meet museum standards regarding "appearance, location, timeline, and overall presentation." Officials explained the display was inconsistent with other exhibit sections and obstructed views of objects within its case. "We were not asked by any Administration or other government officials to remove content from the exhibit," the Smithsonian said in a statement. The institution, which operates 21 museums and the National Zoo, announced plans to update the impeachment section in coming weeks to "reflect all impeachment proceedings in our nation's history." The Washington Post reported Thursday that the museum removed explicit references to Trump's impeachments last month, leaving the exhibit incorrectly stating […]

Russian Missiles Kill Six Including Child As Trump’s Peace Deadline Expires
At least six people were killed and more than 50 were wounded in a Russian drone and missile attack that hit multiple districts across Kyiv and collapsed an apartment building, Ukrainian officials reported. Among the fatalities was a six-year-old boy. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, warned the death toll could increase, with damage reported at over two dozen locations throughout the capital. The distinctive sound of Russian drones was audible for hours over Kyiv, punctuated by the explosive impact of missile strikes. Despite the ongoing attacks, they have persisted even after US President Donald Trump threatened stronger sanctions against Moscow if Vladimir Putin fails to agree to a ceasefire by August 8. Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched 309 drones and cruise missiles overnight. While air defense systems intercepted some incoming projectiles, numerous strikes found their targets, […]

Air India Reports No Fuel Switch Issues on Other Boeing Aircraft Following Fatal Crash Investigation
Air India has completed inspections of fuel switches on its Boeing fleet and found no issues, following last month's crash that resulted in 260 fatalities. The announcement comes as a US report indicates investigators are examining the actions of the aircraft's captain. The preliminary investigation report, released last week by India's aviation authority, revealed that fuel control switches were turned off sequentially shortly after the aircraft departed from Ahmedabad airport. This action deprived the engines of fuel, causing them to shut down and leading to the crash of the London-bound flight, which killed 241 passengers and crew, plus 19 people on the ground. While the preliminary report made no recommendations regarding Boeing, the manufacturer of the 787 Dreamliner, Air India conducted precautionary examinations of locking mechanisms on fuel control switches across its Boeing fleet. These mechanisms are designed to prevent […]

Five Skiers Found Dead in Swiss Alps
Five skiers have been discovered dead in the mountains near Zermatt, Switzerland's renowned luxury resort destination. The Canton Valais prosecutors' office reported that emergency services received an alert about abandoned skis found at approximately 4,000 meters altitude in the Rimpfischhorn mountain area. Boeing Jet Returns to US from China Amid Escalating Tariff War
A Boeing 737 MAX jet intended for Chinese airline Xiamen has returned to the United States, caught in the crossfire of rising trade tensions between the two countries. The aircraft, painted in Xiamen Airlines livery, landed at Seattle's Boeing Field on Sunday at 6:11 p.m. after making refueling stops in Guam and Hawaii during its 5,000-mile journey back from China. The plane was one of several 737 MAX jets awaiting completion and delivery to Chinese carriers at Boeing's Zhoushan center when it became entangled in recent tariff escalations. President Donald Trump recently increased baseline tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%, prompting China to retaliate with 125% tariffs on U.S. goods. These duties could prove financially devastating for Chinese airlines accepting Boeing aircraft, as a new 737 MAX has a market value of approximately $55 million, according to aviation consultancy IBA. NY Governor Defies Federal Order, Congestion Pricing Continues Despite Sunday Deadline
New York City's $9 congestion toll on drivers entering Manhattan's busiest areas will remain in effect, despite the federal government's Sunday deadline to end the program. A spokesperson for New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated, "The program is working. Traffic is down, business is up, and the cameras are staying on." The U.S. Department of Transportation had previously indicated it expected New York to comply with the Sunday deadline to "terminate this program," according to a statement to NBC New York. "USDOT will continue to fight for working-class Americans whose tax dollars have already funded and paid for these roads," the department said. MTA officials told NBC New York that changes were unlikely on Sunday, noting that a federal judge has so far ruled the toll is legal. Court filings suggest the case may not be fully resolved until fall. […]
