A significant 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the California coastline on Thursday, triggering a tsunami warning across coastal regions of California and Oregon, US seismologists reported.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), approximately 100 kilometers west-southwest of Ferndale. The quake was felt across the region, including the San Francisco Bay Area, where residents reported strong shaking and rolling ground movements.
Key details of the seismic event include:
- Tsunami warning issued for coastal areas from Davenport, California to Douglas/Lane Line, Oregon
- Approximately 4.7 million residents currently under warning
- Epicenter located approximately 45 miles southwest of Eureka in Humboldt County
- No tsunami waves reported as of initial warnings
The National Weather Service’s Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu warned of potential hazardous tsunami conditions within 300 kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter. The greatest potential danger remains in coastal communities north of San Francisco.
California Governor Gavin Newsom urged citizens to follow government safety instructions. The San Francisco Zoo proactively closed its facility, evacuating guests and securing animals.
The US West Coast, situated at the confluence of multiple tectonic plates, has historically experienced significant seismic activity. Notable past earthquakes include the 1994 Northridge quake and the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which caused widespread destruction and triggered a tsunami.
Residents in affected coastal areas are advised to remain alert and follow official guidance from local emergency services.

Ferry Services Resume After Six Weeks of Disruption, But Delays Hit Holyhead Reopening
Ferry services to and from Holyhead Port have resumed after being disrupted for over six weeks due to damage sustained during Storm Darragh in early December. The storm caused significant damage to terminals 3 and 5 at the Welsh port, with terminal 5 operating on a temporary basis upon reopening. The Irish Ferries ship WB Yeats arrived in Dublin Port from Holyhead this morning, marking the resumption of services. However, the initial restart was not without problems. Ger Hyland, President of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA), reported a three-hour delay for the second ferry from Dublin to Holyhead due to an electrical fault at the port. Hyland expressed concern about the port's readiness, citing the large backlog of freight on the Welsh side. He emphasized the potential for "huge disaster" for the haulage sector, passengers, and Ireland's imports […]

Conor McGregor, the mixed martial arts fighter and former UFC champion, is facing a civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault at the Kaseya Center (formerly FTX Arena and American Airlines Arena) in Miami during the NBA Finals on June 9, 2023. The plaintiff alleges that McGregor assaulted her in a bathroom at the venue and is seeking unspecified damages from both McGregor and the Miami Heat Limited Partnership, the arena's ownership group. McGregor has denied the allegations through a spokesperson, dismissing them as a "shakedown." While the Miami Police Department initiated an investigation following a report filed on June 11, 2023, the Florida State Attorney’s Office declined to file criminal charges in October 2023. This declination does not preclude the pursuit of a civil suit, which has a different standard of proof than criminal proceedings. The lawsuit also details […]

Historic Fires Devastate Hollywood Area as Pacific Palisades ‘Wiped Off the Map’
Devastating bushfires across Los Angeles have killed at least five people and forced 180,000 residents to evacuate, with several historic areas under threat. Five separate fires are burning, including one near Hollywood Boulevard and another that has devastated parts of the iconic Sunset Boulevard. The Pacific Palisades fire has become the most destructive in LA history. Film director Jon Turteltaub described the situation grimly, saying the affluent suburb has been essentially erased. Of the five active fires, three remain completely uncontained, including the Palisades fire (17,234 acres), the Eaton fire (10,600 acres), and a smaller Sunset fire (43 acres) near Hollywood's historic district. The crisis emerged from a "perfect storm" of conditions, according to LA Mayor Karen Bass. Following heavy rains and vegetation growth in early 2024, severe drought hit southern California. Combined with unusually high winter temperatures and winds exceeding […]

“Biden Implements Extensive Offshore Drilling Restrictions
President Joe Biden has banned new offshore oil and gas drilling across major portions of US coastal waters, preceding Donald Trump's upcoming presidency. The policy encompasses the Atlantic coastline, eastern Gulf of Mexico, Pacific waters off California, Oregon, and Washington, and portions of Alaska's Bering Sea. This action joins several recent climate-related policies enacted by the Biden administration. Despite current record extraction levels, Trump's campaign promoted increased domestic fossil fuel production to reduce gas prices. "Drilling off these coasts could cause irreversible damage to places we hold dear and is unnecessary for our nation's energy needs," Biden stated, citing concerns from coastal communities and businesses. The ban, implemented under the 1953 Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, covers 625 million acres. A 2019 court ruling established that presidents cannot reverse previous drilling bans under this law, potentially complicating Trump's ability to […]

7-Year-Old’s Incredible Solo Journey Through Lion Territory: A 5-Day Survival Story
A 7-year-old boy was found safe after spending five days alone in Zimbabwe's Matusadona National Park, according to official statements from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks). The boy, identified as Tinotenda Pudu, went missing on December 27 after wandering approximately 49 kilometers (30 miles) from his village through the Matusadona game park, an area known to contain wildlife including lions and elephants. ZimParks initiated a search operation immediately after receiving the missing person report. The search faced challenges due to heavy rainfall that obscured the boy's tracks. On December 30, rangers located footprints in the Sakata Valley area of the park, leading to the boy's discovery the following day. During his time in the park, Tinotenda sustained himself by consuming wild fruits and reportedly spent nights on elevated rocky areas. The local Nyaminyami community attempted to guide […]

The transport ministry reports that South Korean investigators have recovered data from one of two black boxes retrieved from Sunday's Jeju Air crash. The crash, which resulted in 179 fatalities, stands as South Korea's deadliest aviation accident. Deputy Minister for Civil Aviation Joo Jong-wan confirmed that US National Transportation Safety Board officials have joined the investigation of the Boeing 737-800 incident. The aircraft, operating as flight 7C2216 from Bangkok, crash-landed at Muan International Airport, colliding with a wall beyond the runway before catching fire. Two crew members survived the incident. Investigators are examining multiple potential factors, including the possibility of a bird strike and weather conditions. The passengers included two Thai nationals and predominantly South Korean citizens, with […]
