World number one Novak Djokovic suffered a surprise quarter-final exit at the Brisbane International, losing 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 to Reilly Opelka, ranked 293rd globally. Returning from a two-year injury break, the American defeated Djokovic in 100 minutes.
Opelka, seeking his fifth career title, will face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the semifinals after the Frenchman’s 7-5 7-6 (7-5) win over Jakub Mensik. Opelka acknowledged the advantage of playing without pressure against Djokovic, who was pursuing his 100th ATP title.
The other semifinal pairs defending champion Grigor Dimitrov, who advanced via walkover, against Jiri Lehecka, who defeated Nicolas Jarry 6-4 6-4.
In women’s singles, top seed Aryna Sabalenka reached the semifinals by overcoming Marie Bouzkova 6-3 6-4. She’ll face 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who defeated Ons Jabeur 6-4 7-6 (7-2). Their previous encounter at the 2024 French Open saw Andreeva become the youngest Grand Slam semifinalist since Martina Hingis in 1997.
The remaining women’s semifinal will feature Polina Kudermetova against Anhelina Kalinina.
Djokovic will now focus on defending his Australian Open title under new coach Andy Murray.

US Senator Confronts Trump in Shock Visit to Deported Man in El Salvador Prison
A US senator has met with Kilmar รbrego Garcรญa, a man who Trump administration officials acknowledge was erroneously deported from Maryland to El Salvador's maximum-security prison. Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen shared photos of the meeting, which appeared to take place in a hotel, as the administration continues fighting against รbrego Garcรญa's return despite Thursday's court ruling against the government. Following the encounter, El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele stated the detainee would remain in the country's custody. The White House has accused รbrego Garcรญa of MS-13 gang membership, a designated foreign terrorist organizationโallegations his lawyer denies. Trump responded on Truth Social, saying Van Hollen "looked like a fool yesterday standing in El Salvador begging for attention from the Fake News Media, or anyone." The visit occurs amid an intensifying conflict between the president and the courts. On Thursday, the 4th […]

“US Gives Ukraine Peace Talks Final Deadline As Trump Threatens To Walk Away
The US will abandon efforts to broker a Russia-Ukraine peace deal within days unless clear progress emerges, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. "We're not going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end," Rubio stated, adding that the US had "other priorities to focus on." Russia, which launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has placed various conditions on potential ceasefire terms. Despite the Trump administration's initial confidence in securing a quick agreement, ceasefire attempts have stalled, with Washington attributing blame to both sides. Following discussions with European leaders in Paris on Thursday, Rubio told reporters: "We need to determine very quickly now - and I'm talking about a matter of days - whether or not this is doable." He emphasized, "If it's not going to happen, then we're just going to move […]

Brazilian Goalkeeper Bento Proving Worth As Al Nassr Title Chase Heats Up
Following last season's close second-place finish to Riyadh rivals Al Hilal, Al Nassr identified key positions requiring reinforcement. While striker Jhon Duran arrived in winter and defensive reinforcements came through Mohamed Simakan partnering Aymeric Laporte, perhaps their most crucial signing was finding a replacement for departing goalkeeper David Ospina. Despite having promising Saudi goalkeeper Nawaf Al Aqidi, the club looked abroad, ultimately signing 25-year-old Brazilian Bento from Athletico Paranaense. With over 150 appearances in Brazil and a national team cap under interim coach Fernando Diniz, Bento represented the ideal profile โ experienced yet still developing, with his prime years ahead. While some viewed Europe as Bento's natural destination, the goalkeeper embraced the Saudi challenge. "I think there is a bit of prejudice against the Saudi league; just look at who plays there," Bento previously stated. "The level is the same, […]

Brazilian Prodigy Takes Younger Teammate Under His Wing At Saudi Club
At just 21 years old and in his first season in the Roshn Saudi League, Robert Renan has displayed remarkable maturity by mentoring a fellow Brazilian newcomer at Al Shabab. The defender, on loan from Russia's Zenit St Petersburg, has been a standout performer in his debut Saudi campaign, missing only two league matches. Renan has integrated perfectly into the team, becoming essential to Al Shabab's pursuit of a top-four finish. With seven rounds remaining, Fatih Terim's side currently sits sixth, three points behind fourth-placed Al Ahli. Beyond his on-field contributions, Renan has taken on another important role. When Al Shabab signed 20-year-old Brazilian Leandrinho during the winter transfer window on loan from Vasco da Gama, the center-back stepped up to help his compatriot adjust to life in Saudi Arabia. Leandrinho has clearly valued this support. "I like being here; […]

Judge Rules Google Illegally Controls Online Ad Market As Tech Giant Faces Second Antitrust Defeat
A US judge has determined that Google maintains an illegal monopoly in online advertising technology, marking the tech giant's second antitrust loss within a year. The lawsuit, brought by the US Department of Justice and 17 states, successfully argued that Google illegally dominates the technology determining online ad placement. This ruling follows an earlier decision that found Google also held a monopoly in online search. Google has announced plans to appeal the decision. "Publishers have many options and they choose Google because our ad tech tools are simple, affordable and effective," stated Lee-Ann Mulholland, Google's head of regulatory affairs. In her ruling, US District Judge Leonie Brinkema declared Google had "wilfully engaged in a series of anticompetitive acts" allowing it to "acquire and maintain monopoly power" in the market. "This exclusionary conduct substantially harmed Google's publisher customers, the competitive process, […]

Shock Upset Returns As Al Hilal Seeks Revenge Against Giant Killer Al Khaleej
It stands as one of the most unexpected results in the Roshn Saudi League this season. Al Hilal, Saudi Arabia's record-setting champions, had established an unprecedented 46-match unbeaten streak in the competition. During this remarkable run, which delivered both the RSL title and King's Cup, they had assembled 34 consecutive victories โ a sequence so impressive it earned recognition from Guinness as a world record. Al Hilal topped the RSL standings once again, with a second straight championship seemingly within their grasp. However, on November 23 at Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Stadium, their dominance crumbled. Under former Al Hilal manager Georgios Donis, Al Khaleej secured a stunning 3-2 victory. As halftime approached, the hosts trailed 2-0, with Marcos Leonardo and Aleksandar Mitrovic capitalizing on assists from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Salem Al Dawsari โ further evidence of Al Hilal's attacking prowess. Golf Superstar’s Trophy Could Inspire Struggling Red Devils, Says Coach
Amorim Invites Masters Champion McIlroy to Bring Green Jacket to Old Trafford Manchester United manager Amorim has invited Rory McIlroy to bring his Masters Green Jacket to Old Trafford, hoping it might inspire his underperforming team. McIlroy, a United supporter who recently completed a career grand slam at Augusta National, had suggested he would take his Green Jacket to the stadium "if it can inspire some better play." Responding through Manchester United's official X account, Amorim welcomed the Northern Irishman: "Hi Rory. Congratulations for the Masters and I want to invite you to Old Trafford to show your trophy. It's really important for us in this moment. You achieved something that a lot of people thought would be impossible, and we want that feeling in our stadium. So I hope to see you soon at Old Trafford and to meet […]

McIlroy’s 2025 Season: What Could Surpass His Masters Triumph?
Even after the incredible drama of his career Grand Slam-completing Masters victory, Rory McIlroy's 2025 golf season still holds numerous possibilities that could potentially match that memorable achievement. McIlroy is scheduled to return to competition next week in New Orleans, where he and close friend Shane Lowry will defend their Zurich Classic title, an event that doesn't award world ranking points. The Northern Irishman's Augusta triumph significantly reduced Scottie Scheffler's world rankings lead from 4.18 to 2.81 points, though the world number one still maintains a comfortable advantage. The duo has established a considerable gap ahead of third-ranked Xander Schauffele, the reigning Open and US PGA champion, who trails McIlroy by 3.76 points. With McIlroy skipping this week's RBC Heritage in South Carolina, Scheffler, who finished just three strokes behind in fourth place at Augusta despite not being in serious […]
