Billionaire Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party following President Donald Trump’s signing of controversial budget legislation known as the “One Big, Beautiful Bill.”
Musk declared the creation of the “America Party” on X Saturday, stating it would “give back” Americans their freedom and challenge what he described as the nation’s “one-party system.”
The announcement followed a poll Musk posted Friday asking whether respondents wanted “independence from the two-party (some would say uni-party) system” that has dominated US politics for approximately two centuries. The survey received over 1.2 million responses.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk wrote Saturday. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
The move follows an escalating dispute between the world’s richest man and Trump over the new budget law, which Musk claims will bankrupt the United States. Musk served as Trump’s primary campaign financier during the 2024 election and led the Department of Government Efficiency from the beginning of the president’s second term, focusing on reducing government spending.
The relationship has deteriorated dramatically over disagreements regarding the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” Musk previously threatened to establish a new political party and spend money targeting lawmakers who supported the legislation, which experts estimate will add $3.4 trillion to the US deficit over a decade.
“They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” Musk had stated.
Neither Trump nor the White House provided immediate comment on Musk’s announcement.
Trump recently threatened to eliminate billions in federal subsidies to Musk’s companies and suggested deporting the South African-born entrepreneur. When asked about potentially deporting Musk, who has held US citizenship since 2002, Trump told reporters “We’ll have to take a look.”
The potential impact of the new party on the 2026 mid-term elections or the 2028 presidential race remains uncertain.
Friday’s poll preceded Musk outlining a potential political strategy targeting vulnerable House and Senate seats, aiming for the party to become “the deciding vote” on key legislation.
“One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” Musk posted on X.
All 435 House seats are contested every two years, while approximately one-third of the Senate’s 100 members, serving six-year terms, face election every two years.
Despite Musk’s substantial financial resources, challenging the Republican-Democratic duopoly presents significant obstacles, given its dominance of US political life for over 160 years. Trump’s approval ratings in his second term have generally maintained above 40 percent, despite often divisive policies.
