Lionel Messi found the net just two minutes after entering as a second-half substitute, helping Inter Miami secure a 2-1 win against the Philadelphia Union at home.
The 37-year-old Argentine star, who had been sidelined with an adductor strain that caused him to miss Argentina’s recent World Cup qualifiers, made an immediate impact upon his return. Messi had sustained the injury during Miami’s previous MLS match, a 2-1 victory at Atlanta on March 16.
Miami had taken the lead in the 23rd minute when Finnish winger Robert Taylor converted a low pass from Benjamin Cremaschi following Jordi Alba’s run down the left side.
Coach Javier Mascherano introduced Messi in the 55th minute, and the impact was instantaneous. Former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez found Messi on the right side of the field, where he created space with a clever move before firing a low right-footed shot into the far corner of the net.
Philadelphia managed to narrow the deficit in the 80th minute when Quinn Sullivan delivered a cross from the right wing that Hungarian midfielder Daniel Gazdag controlled before finishing with a sharp shot.
The victory keeps Inter Miami unbeaten atop the Eastern Conference with four wins from their opening five matches this season.
Miami now faces a demanding schedule, beginning with a trip to Los Angeles for the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal against LAFC on Wednesday. This will be followed by a home fixture against Toronto the subsequent Sunday, with the return leg against LAFC three days later.
Mascherano explained the decision to start Messi on the bench was precautionary: “We didn’t want to risk him from the start because we thought he might be at risk playing the whole game, but we did want him to get some minutes.”
“The plan is that he can recover and travel to Los Angeles. He played today because he was fine. Maybe he wasn’t ready for the full 90 minutes but it was good for him to play 45 minutes. If nothing unusual happens the plan is for him to travel,” the Argentine coach added.

Deadly Myanmar Quake Kills 2700 Including 50 Preschool Children As Rescue Hopes Fade
Myanmar authorities observed a minute of silence Tuesday for victims of a devastating earthquake that claimed over 2,700 lives, including 50 children at a preschool near Mandalay. Military leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing announced the death toll had reached 2,719, potentially exceeding 3,000, with 4,521 injured and 441 missing. The disaster also killed at least 20 people in neighboring Thailand. In Mandalay, sirens sounded at precisely 12:51 pm, marking the moment the earthquake struck. US Military Bombs Houthi Targets as Trump Warns Yemen Rebels Will Be Destroyed
The United States military conducted a series of air strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen overnight, targeting multiple locations across the country. The bombing campaign hit areas near the capital Sanaa and throughout the northern province of Saada early Tuesday, continuing military operations that began in mid-March. According to Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV, US forces launched 15 raids on Saada province, including the city of Saada and the districts of Majz and Sahar. Reports indicated Mount Nabi Shuaib in the Bani Matar district of Sanaa province was also targeted. No immediate casualty reports emerged from Tuesday's strikes, though the Houthis claim that at least 61 people have been killed in Yemen since US bombardments intensified on March 15. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) released two videos on social media showing fighter jets taking off and missiles being launched from an […]

8 Year Old Girl Kidnapped For Child Marriage Sparks Outrage Across Somalia
Outrage has erupted across Somalia after the discovery of an eight-year-old girl living with a self-proclaimed "husband" following her six-month disappearance. The child, who vanished from her home in Puntland last September, was initially reported missing by her family. Authorities later discovered that her father had allegedly consented to her marriage to an adult man identified as Sheikh Mahmoud. Security forces intervened last week, surrounding the man's residence and forcibly entering after he barricaded himself in a room with the child. The incident has triggered widespread social media anger and public demonstrations in Mogadishu. "What's more shocking than the tragedy itself are the allegations of abduction and the fact that her family had no knowledge of her whereabouts for months," said Fadumo Ahmed, chairperson of the Somali Women Vision Organisation. According to the girl's uncle, she was taken from Bosaso […]

Iceland Town Flees As New Monster Volcano Erupts Near Blue Lagoon
A volcano has erupted on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula in the southwest, forcing evacuations of the nearby town of Grindavík and the popular tourist destination Blue Lagoon spa. Iceland's Meteorological Office reported the eruption began around 09:45 local time (10:45 BST) just north of Grindavík. Within an hour, the ground fissure had widened to 700m (2296ft) and was continuing to expand. The volcanic activity followed earthquakes that struck the Sundhnúk crater range around 06:30 local time. Authorities had already ordered evacuations of Grindavík and Blue Lagoon before the eruption occurred. While roads to and from the town remain closed, flight operations have not been affected. The Blue Lagoon announced on its website that it would remain closed through Tuesday. By 11:20 local time, Iceland's Meteorological Office (IMO) reported that the original fissure had extended southward and a new crack had formed. […]

Deadly Mine Explosion Claims Five Lives After Suspected Methane Blast
A devastating explosion at a mine in Spain's northern Asturias region has killed five workers and injured four others, emergency services reported. The accident occurred Monday morning at the Cerredo mine in Degana, approximately 450km northwest of Madrid. All five victims, whose ages ranged from 32 to 54 years old, were from the neighboring Leon region. Adriana Lastra, central government representative in Asturias, told reporters at the scene that preliminary evidence suggests methane may have formed an explosive mixture in the mine, a dangerous phenomenon known as firedamp. "Police are already investigating what happened; they are already at the scene," Lastra stated. The injured miners were transported to hospitals in nearby cities, with two requiring helicopter evacuation. They suffered burns and, in one case, a head injury. As news of the tragedy spread, families of the workers gathered at the […]

Russian Diplomats Kicked Out After Helping Criminal Politician Escape Through Embassy
Moldova has expelled three Russian diplomats after accusing the embassy of helping a pro-Kremlin lawmaker escape imprisonment, triggering Russia's promise of an "appropriate response." Moldova's Foreign Ministry announced the expulsion Monday via Telegram, citing "clear evidence on the conduct of activities contrary to the diplomatic status." Moscow swiftly declared it would retaliate, according to state-run news agency RIA Novosti. The diplomatic tension escalated after Moldova accused the Russian Embassy of orchestrating pro-Kremlin Moldovan lawmaker Alexander Nesterovschii's escape to the Russian-backed breakaway Transnistria region just before he was to be jailed on illegal political funding charges. This incident represents the latest in a series of allegations by Moldova's pro-European government claiming Russian interference in its political affairs, which Moscow consistently denies. Moldova's security service released footage allegedly showing Nesterovschii entering the Russian Embassy in Chisinau on March 18, one day before […]

Spanish Court Annuls Ex-Footballer Dani Alves’ Rape Conviction After Appeal
A Spanish court has overturned former Barcelona player Dani Alves's sexual assault conviction, ruling there was "insufficient evidence" to confirm his guilt. Alves was originally found guilty in February 2024 of raping a woman in a nightclub in December 2022, with an initial sentence of four years and six months in prison. The 41-year-old defender consistently denied any wrongdoing throughout the three-day trial. The Barcelona-based appeals court's four judges unanimously reversed the conviction, citing significant discrepancies between the plaintiff's testimony and video footage taken before Alves and the woman entered the toilet where the alleged assault occurred. This case represents a significant moment in Spain's recently overhauled sexual consent laws, known popularly as the "only yes means yes" legislation. Implemented in 2022, these laws define consent as an explicit expression of will, emphasizing that silence or passivity do not constitute […]

Real Madrid Coach Ancelotti Faces Trial For Alleged Tax Evasion
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will stand trial next week on charges of allegedly failing to declare income to Spain's tax office. Prosecutors are seeking a four-year, nine-month jail term, accusing the 65-year-old Italian of costing Spain's treasury over $1.1m in undeclared earnings from image rights during 2014 and 2015. The two-day trial begins Wednesday, with Ancelotti required to be present for the hearings. Prosecutors allege he only declared his personal remuneration from Real Madrid, despite being a Spanish tax resident with a home in Madrid. They claim Ancelotti created a "complex" system of shell companies to conceal additional earnings from image rights and real estate. According to prosecutors, he earned $1.33m in 2014 and $3.19m in 2015 from image rights sales. A Spanish court previously ordered Ancelotti to stand trial in 2023 without setting a specific date. The coach […]

In a statement released Monday, Inter Miami revealed that medical scans confirmed Messi had suffered a "low-grade injury in the adductor muscle" during Sunday's 2-1 win. The club provided no specific timeline for his recovery. "His clinical progress and response to treatment will determine his availability for competition," Inter Miami stated. The 37-year-old star had recently returned to action for Inter Miami, scoring as a substitute in a CONCACAF Champions Cup match after missing three previous games. Usyk Forced to Face Surprise Challenger as Boxing Dream Fight Collapses
Oleksandr Usyk must begin negotiations to defend his WBO heavyweight championship against Joseph Parker, according to an official order from the boxing organization. This directive potentially derails British fighter Daniel Dubois's hopes for a rematch with the Ukrainian champion. The WBO announced Thursday that Usyk, who currently holds the WBC and WBA titles as well, has 30 days to reach an agreement with New Zealand's Parker for a mandatory defense or face a purse bid situation. Parker successfully defended his WBO interim title in Riyadh recently, stopping Martin Bakole in the second round after Dubois withdrew due to illness. Instead of rescheduling against Parker, IBF champion Dubois had been pursuing another bout with Usyk, who knocked him out in the ninth round in August 2023. The 27-year-old Dubois was reportedly in discussions for a fight with Usyk that would unify […]

England Star Wood Sidelined Just Before Major Ashes Showdown
Mark Wood is expected to miss England's complete home Test schedule this summer after surgery on his left knee. The 35-year-old fast bowler will be unavailable until late July, approximately when the five-Test India series concludes. This means Wood's next potential Test appearance would be during the Ashes tour in Australia starting in November. The Durham paceman's absence represents a significant setback for England during a year featuring two premier Test series. Coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, who favor express pace in their bowling attack, have now lost their quickest bowler for the summer home fixtures, raising questions about Wood's availability for the Australian tour. With Wood considered England's premier Test seamer, his injury further questions the decision to play him in the Champions Trophy. Fellow pacers face their challenges: Jofra Archer hasn't played Test cricket since 2021 […]
