Former world number one Simona Halep has withdrawn from Australian Open qualifying and the Auckland Classic due to knee and shoulder pain experienced after competing in the World Tennis League exhibition event in Abu Dhabi. The 33-year-old Romanian had recently received a wildcard entry from tournament organizers.
Halep, who was cleared to return to competition after her four-year doping ban was reduced to nine months, announced her decision on Instagram after consulting with her team. Currently ranked 877th in the world, the former French Open and Wimbledon champion plans to make her comeback at her home event in Cluj, Romania in early February.
The two-time Grand Slam winner, who finished runner-up at the 2018 Australian Open to Caroline Wozniacki, had maintained her innocence throughout the doping case. The Australian Open qualifying tournament is scheduled for January 6-9, with the main draw beginning January 12.

How Faith Terim Has Transformed Al Shabab Into An Offensive Powerhouse
Al Shabab entered this Roshn Saudi League season with considerable optimism after showing promising signs under Portuguese coach Vitor Pereira during the final stretch of the previous campaign. Despite losing Croatia legend Ivan Rakitic, the Riyadh club retained talented Saudi prospect Musab Al Juwayr on loan. They strengthened their roster by signing RSL star Abderrazak Hamdallah, experienced Europeans Wesley Hoedt and Giacomo Bonaventura, and exciting winger Daniel Podence. These additions created what appeared to be a competitive squad. Al Shabab began impressively, securing seven wins and two draws in their opening 13 RSL matches. However, momentum halted when Pereira departed for the English Premier League in mid-December, leaving a significant void in the club's on-field leadership. The club rebounded by appointing former Turkey national team manager Fatih Terim, though adjustment took time. The team alternated between wins and losses for […]

Irish Leaders Pay Tribute As Pope Francis Dies As 88
President Michael D Higgins has led Irish tributes to Pope Francis, praising the pontiff's "warmth" and "unique humility" following the Vatican's announcement of his death this morning. President Higgins stated that Pope Francis "sought to show in the most striking and moving of ways, the extraordinary importance of the spiritual" as a source of global ethics. He highlighted the Pope's "consistent invocation of a shared humanity" and advocacy on "vital issues" including global hunger, poverty, climate change and justiceโtopics they discussed across five meetings during Francis' papacy. "During his visit to Ireland, Pope Francis spoke of the scandal of child abuse, including in the Church, and its consequences for victims and families. On such matters, and on others such as attitudes towards women and those of the LGBTQ+ community within the Church, Pope Francis sought to play a positive role," […]

Teachers Can Get Permanent Jobs After Just One Year, Says Minister
Newly qualified teachers may soon become eligible for permanent contracts after just one year in a post, according to a new measure announced by the Minister for Education. Helen McEntee unveiled the policy change as hundreds of teachers prepare to attend their annual trade union conferences, with the INTO Congress beginning in Galway. "I am determined to address job security and make teaching a more attractive, sustainable career," McEntee stated. "Allowing newly qualified teachers who are starting in September to gain a permanent contract a year earlier will help teachers to place their careers on a more stable footing much sooner than before. This will provide teachers with the certainty that they need, particularly when applying for mortgages." Job insecurity remains a significant concern for younger teachers, especially at post-primary level. Many report difficulties finding secure full-time positions despite widespread […]

Dublin Hotel Tax Plan Hits Government Roadblock Despite โฌ12M Potential
Four Dublin local authorities have been collaborating on a proposal to implement a tourist tax on hotel rooms in the capital, but the Government appears unlikely to support the initiative. The proposed tax would generate an estimated โฌ12 million annually by adding a charge to tourists' hotel bills. Local councillors have suggested these funds could be directed toward improving amenities throughout Dublin. However, Minister for Tourism Peter Burke is reportedly not planning to introduce such a tax in the near future, focusing instead on the short-term letting bill as his priority. A Government source indicated that while Ireland provides good value for tourists, it is not considered a low-cost destination, making additional costs potentially problematic for the tourism sector. Minister for Culture Patrick O'Donovan has also expressed opposition to the idea, stating he would not welcome a tourist tax and […]

Aubameyang Stuns Al Nassr With Last Gasp Header As Al Qadsiah Dreams Big
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang delivered a dramatic late winner as Al Qadsiah overcame Al Nassr 2-1 on Friday night, breathing new life into their pursuit of a top-three finish in the Roshn Saudi League. At Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Stadium, the hosts took the lead in the 35th minute when Turki Al Ammar reacted quickly to convert a rebound, putting Al Qadsiah in control against the league's third-placed team. The advantage lasted until the 84th minute when Sadio Mane equalized for Al Nassr, seemingly shifting momentum toward the visitors who appeared poised to maintain their grip on third place and potentially close within five points of league leaders Al Ittihad. However, just three minutes later, Aubameyang rose above two Al Nassr defenders to meet Nahitan Nandez's looped pass with a powerful header that found the back of the net, sending the home […]

League Leaders Stumble As Title Race Heats Up In Saudi Arabia
Al Ittihad's advantage at the top of the Roshn Saudi League has been reduced to four points following a night of significant developments in the title race on Thursday. Defending champions Al Hilal applied pressure with a commanding 3-0 home win against Al Khaleej earlier in the evening. Captain Salem Al Dawsari found the net twice while Aleksandar Mitrovic added another goal to complete the victory. With their lead shrinking, Al Ittihad then suffered an unexpected 2-0 defeat at Al Fateh. The table-toppers, who had lost just twice in their previous 27 league matches, fell behind in Al Ahsa when Amine Sbai scored after 10 minutes. Matias Vargas extended Al Fateh's advantage midway through the second half. Both teams missed opportunities from the penalty spot during the match. Mourad Batna's attempt at Al Fateh was disallowed after he made contact […]

Brazilian Goalkeeper Bento Proving Worth As Al Nassr Title Chase Heats Up
Following last season's close second-place finish to Riyadh rivals Al Hilal, Al Nassr identified key positions requiring reinforcement. While striker Jhon Duran arrived in winter and defensive reinforcements came through Mohamed Simakan partnering Aymeric Laporte, perhaps their most crucial signing was finding a replacement for departing goalkeeper David Ospina. Despite having promising Saudi goalkeeper Nawaf Al Aqidi, the club looked abroad, ultimately signing 25-year-old Brazilian Bento from Athletico Paranaense. With over 150 appearances in Brazil and a national team cap under interim coach Fernando Diniz, Bento represented the ideal profile โ experienced yet still developing, with his prime years ahead. While some viewed Europe as Bento's natural destination, the goalkeeper embraced the Saudi challenge. "I think there is a bit of prejudice against the Saudi league; just look at who plays there," Bento previously stated. "The level is the same, […]

Brazilian Prodigy Takes Younger Teammate Under His Wing At Saudi Club
At just 21 years old and in his first season in the Roshn Saudi League, Robert Renan has displayed remarkable maturity by mentoring a fellow Brazilian newcomer at Al Shabab. The defender, on loan from Russia's Zenit St Petersburg, has been a standout performer in his debut Saudi campaign, missing only two league matches. Renan has integrated perfectly into the team, becoming essential to Al Shabab's pursuit of a top-four finish. With seven rounds remaining, Fatih Terim's side currently sits sixth, three points behind fourth-placed Al Ahli. Beyond his on-field contributions, Renan has taken on another important role. When Al Shabab signed 20-year-old Brazilian Leandrinho during the winter transfer window on loan from Vasco da Gama, the center-back stepped up to help his compatriot adjust to life in Saudi Arabia. Leandrinho has clearly valued this support. "I like being here; […]
