Elderly Man Killed As Attacker Stabs Five At Israeli Transit Hub

An elderly man has been killed and four others wounded in what police described as a terrorist stabbing attack at a major transportation hub in Haifa, northern Israel.

The attack occurred at the HaMifratz Central train and bus station, where security guards shot and killed the attacker at the scene, according to police.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service reported that the deceased victim was approximately 70 years old. Those wounded include a 15-year-old boy and a man and woman in their 30s who are in serious condition, along with a 70-year-old woman who sustained moderate injuries.

Police identified the attacker as an Israeli Druze man from Shfaram who had recently returned from abroad. Such attacks by members of Israel’s Druze community are uncommon. The Druze are an ethnic and religious group whose faith developed from Shia Islam. Approximately 150,000 Druze reside in Israel and the occupied Golan Heights, constituting about 1.5% of the population.

A witness told Israel’s Walla news website that the attacker traveled to Haifa on a bus from Shfaram, located about 10km east of Haifa. According to the witness, he began stabbing passengers as the bus arrived at the station before continuing his attack on others in the concourse area.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the incident, stating: “My wife Sara and I send our deepest condolences to the family of the man who was murdered in the shocking terrorist attack in Haifa. We will continue to fight everywhere against those who seek to murder us and we will defeat them.”

While no armed groups immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, Hamas described it as “heroic” and a “natural response” to what it termed Israeli crimes against Palestinians.

The incident occurs amid a stalemate between Hamas and Israel over the progression of the six-week-old Gaza ceasefire agreement. Israel has halted aid deliveries to Gaza after Hamas rejected what Netanyahu’s office characterized as a US proposal to extend the first phase, which concluded Saturday night. Hamas has accused Israel of failing to honor the agreement and insisted that the second phase should proceed as previously agreed.
