Conor McGregor Found Liable for Sexual Assault, Ordered to Pay Damages

Article arrow_drop_down

A civil jury in Ireland has found mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Conor McGregor liable for sexually assaulting a woman in 2018 and ordered him to pay nearly โ‚ฌ250,000 (approximately $260,000) in damages. The verdict came after a two-week trial in which the plaintiff, Nikita Hand, accused McGregor of “brutally raping and battering” her in a Dublin hotel room.

Hand testified that she met McGregor at a party and that he took her to a bedroom where he sexually assaulted her, including putting her in a choke hold multiple times. She described fearing for her life and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the alleged assault.

McGregor vehemently denied the allegations, claiming that their encounter was consensual and that he did not cause any injuries to Hand. His defense team presented surveillance video that they argued showed Hand acting affectionately towards McGregor after they left the hotel room.

Despite a police investigation, prosecutors declined to bring charges against McGregor, citing insufficient evidence. However, Hand pursued a civil lawsuit, seeking damages for the alleged assault.

The jury’s verdict in favor of Hand represents a significant legal victory for the plaintiff and a blow to McGregor’s reputation. Hand expressed relief and vindication outside the court, stating that she hoped her story would encourage other survivors to speak out.

This case highlights the complexities of sexual assault allegations and the challenges faced by survivors in seeking justice. While the criminal justice system may not always result in charges or convictions, civil lawsuits can provide an alternative avenue for survivors to seek accountability and redress.

Ferry services to and from Holyhead Port have resumed after being disrupted for over six weeks due to damage sustained during Storm Darragh in early December. The storm caused significant damage to terminals 3 and 5 at the Welsh port, with terminal 5 operating on a temporary basis upon reopening.   The Irish Ferries ship WB Yeats arrived in Dublin Port from Holyhead this morning, marking the resumption of services. However, the initial restart was not without problems. Ger Hyland, President of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA), reported a three-hour delay for the second ferry from Dublin to Holyhead due to an electrical fault at the port. Hyland expressed concern about the port's readiness, citing the large backlog of freight on the Welsh side. He emphasized the potential for "huge disaster" for the haulage sector, passengers, and Ireland's imports […]

Conor McGregor Named in Civil Lawsuit Alleging Sexual Assault at NBA Finals

Conor McGregor, the mixed martial arts fighter and former UFC champion, is facing a civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault at the Kaseya Center (formerly FTX Arena and American Airlines Arena) in Miami during the NBA Finals on June 9, 2023. The plaintiff alleges that McGregor assaulted her in a bathroom at the venue and is seeking unspecified damages from both McGregor and the Miami Heat Limited Partnership, the arena's ownership group.   McGregor has denied the allegations through a spokesperson, dismissing them as a "shakedown." While the Miami Police Department initiated an investigation following a report filed on June 11, 2023, the Florida State Attorneyโ€™s Office declined to file criminal charges in October 2023. This declination does not preclude the pursuit of a civil suit, which has a different standard of proof than criminal proceedings.   The lawsuit also details […]

Dublin Hotel Tax Plan Hits Government Roadblock Despite โ‚ฌ12M Potential

Four Dublin local authorities have been collaborating on a proposal to implement a tourist tax on hotel rooms in the capital, but the Government appears unlikely to support the initiative. The proposed tax would generate an estimated โ‚ฌ12 million annually by adding a charge to tourists' hotel bills. Local councillors have suggested these funds could be directed toward improving amenities throughout Dublin. However, Minister for Tourism Peter Burke is reportedly not planning to introduce such a tax in the near future, focusing instead on the short-term letting bill as his priority. A Government source indicated that while Ireland provides good value for tourists, it is not considered a low-cost destination, making additional costs potentially problematic for the tourism sector. Minister for Culture Patrick O'Donovan has also expressed opposition to the idea, stating he would not welcome a tourist tax and […]

Boeing Jet Returns to US from China Amid Escalating Tariff War

A Boeing 737 MAX jet intended for Chinese airline Xiamen has returned to the United States, caught in the crossfire of rising trade tensions between the two countries. The aircraft, painted in Xiamen Airlines livery, landed at Seattle's Boeing Field on Sunday at 6:11 p.m. after making refueling stops in Guam and Hawaii during its 5,000-mile journey back from China. The plane was one of several 737 MAX jets awaiting completion and delivery to Chinese carriers at Boeing's Zhoushan center when it became entangled in recent tariff escalations. President Donald Trump recently increased baseline tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%, prompting China to retaliate with 125% tariffs on U.S. goods. These duties could prove financially devastating for Chinese airlines accepting Boeing aircraft, as a new 737 MAX has a market value of approximately $55 million, according to aviation consultancy IBA. NY Governor Defies Federal Order, Congestion Pricing Continues Despite Sunday Deadline

New York City's $9 congestion toll on drivers entering Manhattan's busiest areas will remain in effect, despite the federal government's Sunday deadline to end the program. A spokesperson for New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated, "The program is working. Traffic is down, business is up, and the cameras are staying on." The U.S. Department of Transportation had previously indicated it expected New York to comply with the Sunday deadline to "terminate this program," according to a statement to NBC New York. "USDOT will continue to fight for working-class Americans whose tax dollars have already funded and paid for these roads," the department said. MTA officials told NBC New York that changes were unlikely on Sunday, noting that a federal judge has so far ruled the toll is legal. Court filings suggest the case may not be fully resolved until fall. […]
