The FDA is investigating an E. coli outbreak linked to carrots supplied by Grimmway Farms, prompting a voluntary recall of whole and baby carrots sold under various brands. The outbreak has sadly resulted in one death and 39 illnesses, including 15 hospitalizations, across 18 US states, Puerto Rico, and Canada.
The recalled carrots were distributed under numerous brand names, including 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, and Trader Joe’s, and were sold at major retailers such as Walmart, Kroger, and Target. Canadian stores Loblaws and Compliments are also affected.
Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for any recalled carrots. The organic baby carrots have best-if-used-by dates ranging from September 11th to November 12th, 2024, while the organic whole carrots were available for purchase between August 14th and October 23rd, 2024.
Retailers and distributors are instructed not to sell any recalled products and to notify their customers. While the carrots are likely past their shelf life, it’s crucial to ensure they are removed from circulation.
E. coli is a harmful bacteria that can cause severe stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. In severe cases, it can lead to hospitalization. Symptoms typically appear within one to nine days after consuming contaminated food.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled carrots should discard them immediately. If you experience any symptoms of E. coli infection, seek medical attention promptly.
The FDA’s investigation into the outbreak is ongoing. Consumers can stay updated on the latest information by visiting the FDA’s website or contacting their local health authorities.
