A British woman is among a group of tourists who have fallen ill in Laos after allegedly consuming drinks contaminated with methanol. Simone White, a 28-year-old lawyer from Orpington, Kent, was hospitalized along with several other backpackers in the popular tourist town of Vang Vieng.
This incident is part of a suspected mass methanol poisoning that has tragically claimed the lives of four people, including an Australian teenager, Bianca Jones. Another Australian teenager, Holly Bowles, remains in critical condition in a Thai hospital. Two Danish women and an American man have also died in connection with the suspected poisoning.
The group of affected tourists, including Ms. Jones and Ms. Bowles, were reportedly on a backpacking trip through Southeast Asia when they consumed the tainted drinks at an unknown location in Vang Vieng. They were later found unwell at their hostel and transported to hospitals in Thailand for treatment.
Methanol, a toxic alcohol often used as a cheaper substitute for ethanol, can be fatal even in small quantities. Symptoms of methanol poisoning include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, blindness, and seizures.
Authorities are investigating the source of the contaminated drinks and working to prevent further cases. This incident serves as a stark reminder for travelers to exercise caution when consuming alcohol abroad, especially in regions where methanol contamination may be a concern.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the affected Australians and their families. Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed her condolences and urged travelers to be aware of the risks associated with consuming unregulated alcohol.
This tragic event highlights the importance of travel safety and awareness, particularly when it comes to food and beverage consumption in unfamiliar environments. Tourists are advised to be vigilant and make informed choices to protect their health and well-being while traveling abroad.
