US President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on BRICS nations if they create a rival currency to the US dollar.
“The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER,” Trump wrote on social media on Saturday. The BRICS alliance includes China, Russia, Brazil, India, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Trump demanded a commitment from these countries that they would not create a new currency to replace the US dollar, warning they would face complete tariffs and lose access to the US market. “They can go find another sucker,” he stated.
During the US election, Trump campaigned on implementing widespread tariffs. Leading politicians in Brazil and Russia have discussed creating a BRICS currency to reduce the US dollar’s global trade dominance, though internal disagreements have slowed progress.
Some Trump allies suggest his announcements are negotiation tactics. Republican Senator Ted Cruz highlighted the “importance of leverage,” noting how tariff threats have previously produced action.
Trump’s pick for Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, previously characterized Trump’s tariff threats as a “escalate to de-escalate” strategy, suggesting he is ultimately a free trader.
Economists widely dispute Trump’s claim that tariffs are not a cost to US consumers. Previous economic studies indicate that import taxes are typically absorbed by domestic US firms and ultimately passed on to consumers.
Trump imposed numerous tariffs during his first term, many of which remain in place under President Joe Biden’s administration.

Ferry Services Resume After Six Weeks of Disruption, But Delays Hit Holyhead Reopening
Ferry services to and from Holyhead Port have resumed after being disrupted for over six weeks due to damage sustained during Storm Darragh in early December. The storm caused significant damage to terminals 3 and 5 at the Welsh port, with terminal 5 operating on a temporary basis upon reopening. The Irish Ferries ship WB Yeats arrived in Dublin Port from Holyhead this morning, marking the resumption of services. However, the initial restart was not without problems. Ger Hyland, President of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA), reported a three-hour delay for the second ferry from Dublin to Holyhead due to an electrical fault at the port. Hyland expressed concern about the port's readiness, citing the large backlog of freight on the Welsh side. He emphasized the potential for "huge disaster" for the haulage sector, passengers, and Ireland's imports […]

Conor McGregor Named in Civil Lawsuit Alleging Sexual Assault at NBA Finals
Conor McGregor, the mixed martial arts fighter and former UFC champion, is facing a civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault at the Kaseya Center (formerly FTX Arena and American Airlines Arena) in Miami during the NBA Finals on June 9, 2023. The plaintiff alleges that McGregor assaulted her in a bathroom at the venue and is seeking unspecified damages from both McGregor and the Miami Heat Limited Partnership, the arena's ownership group. McGregor has denied the allegations through a spokesperson, dismissing them as a "shakedown." While the Miami Police Department initiated an investigation following a report filed on June 11, 2023, the Florida State Attorneyโs Office declined to file criminal charges in October 2023. This declination does not preclude the pursuit of a civil suit, which has a different standard of proof than criminal proceedings. The lawsuit also details […]

Hard-Right Allies at Odds: Meloni’s Diplomatic Tightrope Between Trump and the EU
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni faced a delicate diplomatic challenge during her White House visit as she attempted to balance her ideological alignment with President Trump against her responsibilities to the European Union. The relationship between the United States and the EU has grown increasingly strained under Trump's administration. Meloni, part of a newer generation of hard-right European leaders with connections to the Trump administration, has cultivated a personal rapport with the president, who has described her as "a real live wire" and a "fantastic woman." Her anti-immigration stance aligns with Trump's policies, earning her a reputation as someone who can effectively communicate with him. Meloni's visit comes amid widespread international concern over Trump's global tariff policies. Initially imposing a 20% tax on all EU goods entering the United States, Trump later reduced this to a 10% blanket rate following […]

US Congressional Watchdog to Investigate Changes at the SEC
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) will examine recent changes at the Securities and Exchange Commission, including those potentially influenced by the White House or Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), according to a letter sent to Democratic lawmakers. The GAO, Congress's nonpartisan research arm, informed Senators Elizabeth Warren and Mark Warner that it will review the SEC's recent efforts to reduce staff, terminate leases, and consolidate operations, as detailed in an April 8 letter viewed by Reuters. The lawmakers requested the investigation last month following media reports about DOGE's involvement and other significant changes at the market regulator. A. Nicole Clowers, managing director of GAO's congressional relations office, confirmed in the letter that the request "is within the scope of (GAO's) authority" and that work would commence in approximately three months. Since President Donald Trump took office and […]

Zamfara Governor Outlines Vision – Security, Education and Mineral Development Take Center Stage
Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has detailed his administration's focus on security improvement, educational reform, healthcare revitalization, and mineral resource development as cornerstones of his governance agenda. During a recent interview on ARISE NEWS, Governor Lawal emphasized the need for strategic prioritization: "The problems are multi-dimensional, and we have to prioritize. The first thing, like I said, is security because without security, there won't be anything. Second, fundamental is educationโฆ all the solid minerals we have in Zamfara are of no benefit if we are the poorest, and (harnessing them) is exactly what we are doing right now." When questioned about the feasibility of Zamfara's โฆ500 billion budget amid economic uncertainties, Lawal expressed confidence. "We are ready to face those challenges because there's always an alternative in terms of budgetary process and execution," he stated. The governor highlighted diversification […]

Trump Announces New Tariff Strategy for Chinese Electronics After Initial Exemption
Donald Trump has clarified that Chinese-made smartphones and other electronics will not be exempt from tariffs, explaining they are instead being moved to a different "tariff bucket." This announcement comes after European stock markets rose Monday following Friday's news that these products would avoid levies of up to 145%. China has urged Trump to "completely cancel" his tariff regime and "return to the right path of mutual respect." US officials indicated on Sunday that these products would instead face a "semiconductor tariff," with Trump expected to provide additional details later. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed this new levy would supplement the global tariffs the US imposed earlier this month, which were subsequently paused for 90 days. "We need our medicines and we need semiconductors and our electronics to be built in America," Lutnick stated. A US customs notice released […]

Trump Insists US Steel Must Remain American-Owned, Challenging $15B Nippon Deal
President Donald Trump reaffirmed his opposition to foreign ownership of U.S. Steel on Sunday, stating he doesn't believe a foreign company should control the iconic American manufacturer. This repeated stance further dampens prospects for Japan's Nippon Steel's $15 billion acquisition bid. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning to Washington from Florida, Trump maintained his position first expressed last Wednesday when he said he didn't want to see U.S. Steel "go to Japan"โcomments" that triggered a 7% drop in the company's share price. Following Trump's initial remarks, both companies stated they were working closely with the Trump administration to "secure a significant investment." Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba revealed that he and Trump had discussed the deal during their February meeting. "The difference between acquisition and investment must be carefully examined in light of the U.S. law, but […]

Phone and Computer Prices Dodge Trump’s Mega-Tariffs
The U.S. administration has announced key exemptions to its recent tariff policies, specifically excluding smartphones, computers, and electronic components from the 125% China-specific tariff and the 10% global tariff affecting most other nations. The exemptions, detailed in a U.S. Customs and Border Protection release, cover a range of electronic products including laptops, hard drives, computer processors, and memory chips. This decision acknowledges the current reality that these items are primarily manufactured outside the United States, with domestic production capabilities potentially requiring years to develop. The exemption mainly benefits Apple's operations, as the company primarily manufactures its phones in China through orders from its Cork, Ireland facility. There had been concerns that supply chain disruptions could impact the profitability of Apple's Irish operations and subsequent corporate tax payments in Ireland. Semiconductor manufacturing equipment also received exemption status, a significant development for […]
