The Metropolitan Police is evaluating its response after receiving allegations that 10 British nationals committed war crimes and crimes against humanity while serving in Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
A Counter Terrorism Policing spokesperson confirmed that “specialist officers” will assess the 240-page report to determine if a “UK-based investigation may be required.”
According to a summary of the dossier, the British nationals are accused of participating in forced civilian displacement and coordinated attacks on protected sites. The BBC has contacted the Israel Defense Forces for comment. Israel has previously rejected similar allegations as “completely false.”
The report was submitted to the Met’s War Crimes Team by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights and the Public Interest Law Centre. It claims the alleged offenses occurred between October 2023 and May 2024.
While the 10 British nationals remain unnamed publicly, they allegedly conducted “indiscriminate attacks” on civilian areas, including hospitals, and participated in the “targeted killing” of civilians and aid workers. The summary notes that some held officer positions in the Israeli military, and some possessed Israeli-British dual nationality.
Since the Gaza conflict began, the Metropolitan Police has received approximately 180 referrals related to the war. However, the force stated: “At this time, there is no UK-based investigation into any matters relating to this particular conflict.”
Human rights lawyer Michael Mansfield KC, who helped prepare the report, urged the Met to take the allegations “seriously,” conduct an investigation, and prosecute individuals if the allegations are substantiated.
The Gaza conflict began following Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the capture of 251 hostages who were taken to Gaza. According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, over 50,750 Palestinians have died in Israel’s military response since then.
