Chavez-DeRemer, who served a single term in Congress, represents an unusual choice for a Republican administration due to her previous support of the PRO Act, legislation prioritized by labor unions. Her nomination has gained endorsement from the Teamsters Union, with their General President Sean M. O’Brien praising her potential role in worker protection and union job creation.
However, her stance on labor issues has drawn criticism from some Senate Republicans. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky has explicitly stated his opposition, citing concerns about her support for the PRO Act and its implications for right-to-work laws. Paul suggests she could lose up to 15 Republican votes.
The nomination faces a crucial test in the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, where Republicans hold a slim 11-10 majority. With Paul’s declared opposition, Chavez-DeRemer would need Democratic support to advance from committee. Democratic members, including ranking member Senator Bernie Sanders, have not yet indicated their voting intentions.
Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma has emerged as a supporter, planning to introduce Chavez-DeRemer at the hearing. He defends her nomination as representing Trump’s expansion of the Republican party to include union support. Mullin emphasized that Chavez-DeRemer has committed to implementing the president’s policies.
Committee Chairman Senator Bill Cassidy acknowledges Republican concerns about her past positions but suggests her commitment to following presidential direction could outweigh these issues. An additional aspect likely to be discussed at the hearing is Chavez-DeRemer’s disclosed previous employment at a Planned Parenthood clinic in her early twenties.
Senate Republican leadership has not confirmed whether they would proceed with a floor vote if the committee vote proves unfavorable.
