A diplomatic clash between the US and Colombia was swiftly resolved after President Trump threatened 25% tariffs on Colombian goods in response to the country blocking two US military deportation flights.
The conflict began when Colombian President Gustavo Petro refused entry to US military flights carrying deportees, insisting migrants should return on civilian aircraft “without treating them like criminals.” Trump retaliated by announcing tariffs and visa sanctions through Truth Social.
Petro initially stood firm, posting on X that Trump’s “blockade” didn’t frighten Colombia, “the country of beauty” and “heart of the world.” However, within hours, Colombia agreed to accept migrants on US military aircraft “without limitation or delay,” according to a White House statement.
The White House termed this a victory for Trump’s approach, though warned that drafted tariffs would be implemented if Colombia breached the agreement. Visa sanctions and enhanced border inspections will remain until the first successful deportation flight.
Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo stated they would continue accepting deportees while “guaranteeing them decent conditions, as citizens subject to rights.” He announced plans to travel to Washington for high-level meetings and said Petro’s presidential plane would facilitate the return of Colombians originally scheduled on the blocked flights.
This dispute emerged amid Trump’s broader immigration crackdown, including executive orders expanding ICE’s detention powers. ICE conducted “targeted” arrests in Chicago on Sunday, accompanied by new “border czar” Tom Homan, who called for increased detention centre funding.
The recent passage of the Laken Riley Act will expand immigration authorities’ detention powers, though Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized it as eroding civil rights.

How Faith Terim Has Transformed Al Shabab Into An Offensive Powerhouse
Al Shabab entered this Roshn Saudi League season with considerable optimism after showing promising signs under Portuguese coach Vitor Pereira during the final stretch of the previous campaign. Despite losing Croatia legend Ivan Rakitic, the Riyadh club retained talented Saudi prospect Musab Al Juwayr on loan. They strengthened their roster by signing RSL star Abderrazak Hamdallah, experienced Europeans Wesley Hoedt and Giacomo Bonaventura, and exciting winger Daniel Podence. These additions created what appeared to be a competitive squad. Al Shabab began impressively, securing seven wins and two draws in their opening 13 RSL matches. However, momentum halted when Pereira departed for the English Premier League in mid-December, leaving a significant void in the club's on-field leadership. The club rebounded by appointing former Turkey national team manager Fatih Terim, though adjustment took time. The team alternated between wins and losses for […]

Teachers Can Get Permanent Jobs After Just One Year, Says Minister
Newly qualified teachers may soon become eligible for permanent contracts after just one year in a post, according to a new measure announced by the Minister for Education. Helen McEntee unveiled the policy change as hundreds of teachers prepare to attend their annual trade union conferences, with the INTO Congress beginning in Galway. "I am determined to address job security and make teaching a more attractive, sustainable career," McEntee stated. "Allowing newly qualified teachers who are starting in September to gain a permanent contract a year earlier will help teachers to place their careers on a more stable footing much sooner than before. This will provide teachers with the certainty that they need, particularly when applying for mortgages." Job insecurity remains a significant concern for younger teachers, especially at post-primary level. Many report difficulties finding secure full-time positions despite widespread […]

Dublin Hotel Tax Plan Hits Government Roadblock Despite โฌ12M Potential
Four Dublin local authorities have been collaborating on a proposal to implement a tourist tax on hotel rooms in the capital, but the Government appears unlikely to support the initiative. The proposed tax would generate an estimated โฌ12 million annually by adding a charge to tourists' hotel bills. Local councillors have suggested these funds could be directed toward improving amenities throughout Dublin. However, Minister for Tourism Peter Burke is reportedly not planning to introduce such a tax in the near future, focusing instead on the short-term letting bill as his priority. A Government source indicated that while Ireland provides good value for tourists, it is not considered a low-cost destination, making additional costs potentially problematic for the tourism sector. Minister for Culture Patrick O'Donovan has also expressed opposition to the idea, stating he would not welcome a tourist tax and […]

15 Years After Deepwater Horizon, Victims Still Fighting as Gulf Recovery Stalls
Fifteen years after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion killed 11 workers and spilled 134 million gallons of crude into the Gulf of Mexico, the aftermath of America's worst offshore oil disaster continues to unfold with mixed results. BP has paid billions in damages, funding extensive coastal restoration projects across five Gulf states. However, cleanup workers and residents claiming health impacts from the spill have faced significant legal hurdles, with most lawsuits dismissed and minimal compensation awarded. In Lafitte, Louisiana, Tammy Gremillion mourns her daughter Jennifer, who died of leukemia in 2020 after working in BP's cleanup operation. "They didn't know the dangers. They didn't do what they should have to protect these young people," Gremillion said, convinced her daughter's cancer resulted from toxin exposure during cleanup efforts. Despite filing a lawsuit in 2022, Gremillion faces an uphill battle. An […]
