Two students from Narok County have achieved exceptional results in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, showcasing determination despite challenging circumstances.
Ado Melita earned 83 points with A grades in 7 subjects at Moi Forces Academy in Nairobi. His father Patrick Yiapan, who works at an international pharmaceuticals company, honored this achievement by gifting him a Sahiwal heifer. This followed an earlier gift of a Merion sheep from his uncle Lekishon Yiapan, a Kenya Defense Forces member. In Maasai culture, a ram symbolizes recognition of heroic achievements.
The gifting ceremony took place at their home in Ewor-Enkitok village, Narok North Sub County. Following tradition, Melita will now address his father as ‘entawuo,’ meaning heifer in the Maa language. Yiapan expressed pride in his son, who aims to become a software engineer. “It’s not the value of the gift that matters, it is the love we attach to it,” Yiapan stated. His mother Susan attributed his success to consistent hard work and faith.
Stephen Ntayia from Masikonde Day Secondary School emerged as Narok county’s top student with 82 points. Despite scoring 395 marks in primary school and gaining admission to Kakamega School, financial constraints led him to attend the local day school. He shared accommodation with other students in Majengo estate, studying late into the night and waking at 3 AM for revision.
Faced with poverty at home, Ntayia remained at school during holidays to study. He received news of his results while working with his mother as a casual laborer. His father Edwin noted that his second-born son maintained A grades throughout secondary school.
School Principal Caroline Rono highlighted this as the first A grade since the school began national examinations in 2012. She praised Ntayia’s dedication, noting his extended study hours from early morning until late evening.
Njeru Lemayian, who shared accommodation with Ntayia, achieved an A- grade. Both students relied on school-provided relief food due to financial hardships. Lemayian aspires to study Medicine to help others and develop new medical treatments.
These achievements demonstrate remarkable resilience, with both students overcoming significant obstacles through dedication to their studies.
