Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Ann Telnaes has resigned from the Washington Post following the newspaper’s decision not to publish her cartoon depicting Jeff Bezos and other prominent figures.
The rejected cartoon showed Amazon founder Bezos, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and a Mickey Mouse character presenting bags of money to a Trump statue. The illustration included Disney, which recently settled a $15 million defamation lawsuit with Trump.
Telnaes, who joined the Post in 2008, announced her departure through a Substack post. “In all that time I’ve never had a cartoon killed because of who or what I chose to aim my pen at,” she wrote. “Until now.” She explained that her cartoon intended to critique “these men with lucrative government contracts and an interest in eliminating regulations.”
The Post’s editorial page editor David Shipley provided a different explanation for rejecting the cartoon. He stated the decision was based on content redundancy, noting they had “just published a column on the same topic” and had scheduled another satirical piece for publication.
This isn’t Telnaes’ first controversy at the Post. In 2015, the newspaper retracted her cartoon depicting Senator Ted Cruz’s young daughters as monkeys, citing their policy against featuring children in such content.
Recent events at the Post include Bezos’s announcement of Amazon’s $1 million donation to Trump’s inauguration fund, plus a $1 million in-kind contribution. Bezos characterized Trump’s victory as “an extraordinary political comeback” and met with him at Mar-a-Lago.
The newspaper recently faced criticism after Bezos prevented the editorial board from endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, reportedly leading to over 250,000 lost subscribers. The Los Angeles Times, whose owner Patrick Soon-Shiong appeared in Telnaes’ rejected cartoon, made a similar decision regarding Harris’s endorsement.
