Trinidad and Tobago has entered a state of emergency following escalating gang violence and record-breaking homicide rates. President Christine Carla Kangaloo made the declaration upon Prime Minister Keith Rowley’s recommendation as the nation grapples with growing security concerns.
The Caribbean nation, with a population of 1.5 million, has recorded over 620 murders this year, placing it among the highest homicide rates in Latin America and the Caribbean. Most killings are attributed to organized crime groups involved in international drug trafficking. The country’s location near Venezuela and its direct transportation routes to Europe and North America make it particularly vulnerable to narcotics trans-shipment, according to the US State Department.
A recent incident in the Laventille area saw five men shot dead in a shop, which police believe was retaliation for a gang member’s murder the previous day. While specific details of the emergency measures have not been announced, the declaration comes as the country approaches a general election, due by August 2025.
Prime Minister Rowley’s People’s National Movement party, which has governed since September 2015, faces competition from the United National Congress, led by former Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Trump Cuts Devastate Irish Aid Agencies As Hundreds Lose Jobs Worldwide
US aid funding cuts have severely impacted Irish aid agencies working in developing countries, according to documents obtained by RTร News through Freedom of Information requests. The documents reveal significant uncertainty among Irish non-governmental organizations following President Donald Trump's executive order freezing and terminating foreign aid funding. As the Trump administration's review of US foreign aid concludes this weekend, Irish agencies are already dealing with job losses, suspended overseas programs, and operational uncertainty. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), previously one of the world's largest foreign aid donors, was effectively dismantled by the Trump administration in January. Emails and briefing notes show the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) maintained contact with Ireland's aid agencies as tens of millions in funding essentially disappeared. Hundreds of redundancies have occurred across Irish aid organizations, with development projects in countries including Sierra […]

Aubameyang Stuns Al Nassr With Last Gasp Header As Al Qadsiah Dreams Big
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang delivered a dramatic late winner as Al Qadsiah overcame Al Nassr 2-1 on Friday night, breathing new life into their pursuit of a top-three finish in the Roshn Saudi League. At Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Stadium, the hosts took the lead in the 35th minute when Turki Al Ammar reacted quickly to convert a rebound, putting Al Qadsiah in control against the league's third-placed team. The advantage lasted until the 84th minute when Sadio Mane equalized for Al Nassr, seemingly shifting momentum toward the visitors who appeared poised to maintain their grip on third place and potentially close within five points of league leaders Al Ittihad. However, just three minutes later, Aubameyang rose above two Al Nassr defenders to meet Nahitan Nandez's looped pass with a powerful header that found the back of the net, sending the home […]

Supreme Court Blocks Trump’s Gang Deportations Using Ancient War Law
The US Supreme Court has ordered the Trump administration to halt deportations of alleged Venezuelan gang members who are being detained in North Texas under an 18th-century wartime statute. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit against the government, arguing that the detainees haven't been given opportunities to challenge their cases in court. President Trump has deported accused Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador's notorious mega-jail by invoking the 1798 Alien Enemies Act. This law grants the president authority to detain and deport citizens of "enemy" nations without typical legal processes. Historically, the act had only been utilized three times during wartime periods, with its last application during World War II when Japanese descendants were imprisoned without trial, and many sent to internment camps. Trump's aggressive immigration policies have faced several legal challenges since he took office in […]

US Senator Confronts Trump in Shock Visit to Deported Man in El Salvador Prison
A US senator has met with Kilmar รbrego Garcรญa, a man who Trump administration officials acknowledge was erroneously deported from Maryland to El Salvador's maximum-security prison. Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen shared photos of the meeting, which appeared to take place in a hotel, as the administration continues fighting against รbrego Garcรญa's return despite Thursday's court ruling against the government. Following the encounter, El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele stated the detainee would remain in the country's custody. The White House has accused รbrego Garcรญa of MS-13 gang membership, a designated foreign terrorist organizationโallegations his lawyer denies. Trump responded on Truth Social, saying Van Hollen "looked like a fool yesterday standing in El Salvador begging for attention from the Fake News Media, or anyone." The visit occurs amid an intensifying conflict between the president and the courts. On Thursday, the 4th […]

“US Gives Ukraine Peace Talks Final Deadline As Trump Threatens To Walk Away
The US will abandon efforts to broker a Russia-Ukraine peace deal within days unless clear progress emerges, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. "We're not going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end," Rubio stated, adding that the US had "other priorities to focus on." Russia, which launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has placed various conditions on potential ceasefire terms. Despite the Trump administration's initial confidence in securing a quick agreement, ceasefire attempts have stalled, with Washington attributing blame to both sides. Following discussions with European leaders in Paris on Thursday, Rubio told reporters: "We need to determine very quickly now - and I'm talking about a matter of days - whether or not this is doable." He emphasized, "If it's not going to happen, then we're just going to move […]

Foreign Students Face Uncertainty as US Revokes Visas and Detains Campus Activists
Foreign students across US colleges are experiencing growing anxiety as plainclothes agents have been seen detaining students in unmarked cars, with videos of these incidents circulating on social media. Those taken into custody during these high-profile detentions have not faced criminal charges but appear targeted for involvement in pro-Palestinian campus protests. The Trump administration has repeatedly stated that visas are a "privilege" that can be revoked for various reasons. However, the scale of the crackdown appears larger than initially believed, with over 1,000 international students or recent graduates across US colleges having had their visas revoked or legal statuses changed, according to a tracker from Inside Higher Ed. Many affected students don't know why their status changed, and universities often only discover these changes when checking government databases that track international students' visa status. This combination of targeted detentions and […]

Human Skull Discovered in Garden During Home Renovation in Cork
GARDAร are investigating the discovery of what appear to be historic human remains in west Cork after a skull wrapped in plastic was unearthed during property development work. The discovery occurred outside the village of Eyeries, where a homeowner had been renovating her property and garden in recent weeks. Workers uncovered an old plastic shopping bag while using a mini excavator to level portions of the garden for installing a greenhouse intended for growing organic vegetables and herbs. Authorities are uncertain whether the remains belong to an adult or a teenager, but they appear to have been there for a considerable period. The plastic was notably faded, and the remains consisted primarily of bone. One source indicated the remains could potentially date back […]
