Son Inherits Family's Tourist Cave, Fulfilling Childhood Dream

At age five, Oliver Bowerman was surprised when his parents announced they were moving to a cave. Rather than a Stone Age lifestyle, his family had purchased Stump Cross Caverns, a tourist attraction in Yorkshire Dales.

The Bowermans acquired the cave system in 2003 after responding to a newspaper ad describing it as a “once in a generation” opportunity. Originally discovered by lead miners in the 19th century, the caverns became a tourist site in 1926 under Septimus Wray’s ownership.

Now, 22 years later, Oliver is taking over management from his mother Lisa. After completing his psychology degree, he joined the family business, bringing fresh ideas including plans to open a new section previously accessible only to potholers.

“To be in a position to hand it over to somebody with such an amazing business brain and such a vision for the future, it’s quite exciting,” Lisa said, who will remain involved in education and creative aspects while Oliver leads business decisions.

Starting January, a two-year excavation project will begin to make the new cavern section publicly accessible. The expansion requires significant engineering work but will allow visitors to experience previously unseen chambers.

The unique family business has sparked interesting reactions over the years. “When I said ‘oh, we have a cave’, the look on people’s faces was quite interesting,” Oliver recalled of his university days.

Catholic Priest Charged With Trying To Contact Child For Sexual Purposes

A 58-year-old Catholic priest from Donegal faced court proceedings after being charged with attempted sexual communication with a child. Fr Edward Gallagher, residing at Orchard Park in Lifford, appeared before Derry Magistrates' Court via video link following his arrest on Thursday. The arrest occurred outside a hotel in Derry. During the special sitting, which took place in Dungannon, Fr Gallagher confirmed he understood the charge against him. The charge alleges attempted sexual communication with a child between April 2 and April 17. A Police Service of Northern Ireland officer testified that they could connect Fr Gallagher to the charge presented to the court. The priest's legal representative applied for legal aid during the proceedings, explaining that while his client had previously received "a modest stipend," those financial arrangements would likely "cease" due to "the circumstances of this case." No application […]

Trump Cuts Devastate Irish Aid Agencies As Hundreds Lose Jobs Worldwide

US aid funding cuts have severely impacted Irish aid agencies working in developing countries, according to documents obtained by RTร‰ News through Freedom of Information requests. The documents reveal significant uncertainty among Irish non-governmental organizations following President Donald Trump's executive order freezing and terminating foreign aid funding. As the Trump administration's review of US foreign aid concludes this weekend, Irish agencies are already dealing with job losses, suspended overseas programs, and operational uncertainty. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), previously one of the world's largest foreign aid donors, was effectively dismantled by the Trump administration in January. Emails and briefing notes show the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) maintained contact with Ireland's aid agencies as tens of millions in funding essentially disappeared. Hundreds of redundancies have occurred across Irish aid organizations, with development projects in countries including Sierra […]

Aubameyang Stuns Al Nassr With Last Gasp Header As Al Qadsiah Dreams Big

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang delivered a dramatic late winner as Al Qadsiah overcame Al Nassr 2-1 on Friday night, breathing new life into their pursuit of a top-three finish in the Roshn Saudi League. At Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Stadium, the hosts took the lead in the 35th minute when Turki Al Ammar reacted quickly to convert a rebound, putting Al Qadsiah in control against the league's third-placed team. The advantage lasted until the 84th minute when Sadio Mane equalized for Al Nassr, seemingly shifting momentum toward the visitors who appeared poised to maintain their grip on third place and potentially close within five points of league leaders Al Ittihad. However, just three minutes later, Aubameyang rose above two Al Nassr defenders to meet Nahitan Nandez's looped pass with a powerful header that found the back of the net, sending the home […]

Supreme Court Blocks Trump’s Gang Deportations Using Ancient War Law

The US Supreme Court has ordered the Trump administration to halt deportations of alleged Venezuelan gang members who are being detained in North Texas under an 18th-century wartime statute. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit against the government, arguing that the detainees haven't been given opportunities to challenge their cases in court. President Trump has deported accused Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador's notorious mega-jail by invoking the 1798 Alien Enemies Act. This law grants the president authority to detain and deport citizens of "enemy" nations without typical legal processes. Historically, the act had only been utilized three times during wartime periods, with its last application during World War II when Japanese descendants were imprisoned without trial, and many sent to internment camps. Trump's aggressive immigration policies have faced several legal challenges since he took office in […]

US Senator Confronts Trump in Shock Visit to Deported Man in El Salvador Prison

A US senator has met with Kilmar รbrego Garcรญa, a man who Trump administration officials acknowledge was erroneously deported from Maryland to El Salvador's maximum-security prison. Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen shared photos of the meeting, which appeared to take place in a hotel, as the administration continues fighting against รbrego Garcรญa's return despite Thursday's court ruling against the government. Following the encounter, El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele stated the detainee would remain in the country's custody. The White House has accused รbrego Garcรญa of MS-13 gang membership, a designated foreign terrorist organizationโ€”allegations his lawyer denies. Trump responded on Truth Social, saying Van Hollen "looked like a fool yesterday standing in El Salvador begging for attention from the Fake News Media, or anyone." The visit occurs amid an intensifying conflict between the president and the courts. On Thursday, the 4th […]

“US Gives Ukraine Peace Talks Final Deadline As Trump Threatens To Walk Away

The US will abandon efforts to broker a Russia-Ukraine peace deal within days unless clear progress emerges, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. "We're not going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end," Rubio stated, adding that the US had "other priorities to focus on." Russia, which launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has placed various conditions on potential ceasefire terms. Despite the Trump administration's initial confidence in securing a quick agreement, ceasefire attempts have stalled, with Washington attributing blame to both sides. Following discussions with European leaders in Paris on Thursday, Rubio told reporters: "We need to determine very quickly now - and I'm talking about a matter of days - whether or not this is doable." He emphasized, "If it's not going to happen, then we're just going to move […]

Nigeria to Launch Calabar Section of Coastal Highway April 14, Connecting to Sokoto-Badagry Route

Nigeria's Federal Government will officially commence construction on the Calabar section of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway on April 14, addressing concerns that development has been limited to the Lagos area. During an ARISE News interview on Sunday, Minister of Works Dave Umahi announced a series of launch events: April 14 in Calabar (Cross River), April 15 in Akwa Ibom, and April 16 in Ebonyi State. "By the 14th of this month, we are going to be flagging off the construction in the Calabar axis," Umahi stated, rejecting claims that work was only happening in Lagos. "No, that is not a fact. We are working right now in Calabar and Akwa Ibom," he emphasized. The minister described another of President Tinubu's legacy projects that will connect Calabar with Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and ultimately Abujaโ€”part of a Trans-Sahara route designed to […]

A tourist submarine sank off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, resulting in six fatalities and multiple injuries, according to official reports from local authorities. The incident occurred on Thursday when the submarine "Sindbad" was carrying 45 foreign tourists and five Egyptian crew members. Red Sea governor Maj. Gen. Amr Hanafi confirmed that all six deceased individuals were Russian nationals, while 29 of the 39 rescued tourists sustained injuries and required hospitalization. Major Power Outage Forces Heathrow Airport Closure, Causing Global Flight Disruptions

Britain's Heathrow Airport shut down Friday after a major fire at a nearby electrical substation cut power to the facility, disrupting flight schedules worldwide. Approximately 70 firefighters battled the blaze in west London, which also disabled the airport's backup power system. Large orange flames and black smoke were visible before firefighters contained the fire. By morning, roads around Britain's largest airport were mostly empty except for some departing passengers with luggage. Fire investigators will examine the cause, though Energy Minister Ed Miliband indicated it didn't appear to be foul play. Heathrow announced the airport would remain closed until midnight due to the significant power outage, affecting 1,351 scheduled flights and up to 291,000 passengers. "Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information," the airport stated. "We apologize for the inconvenience." The […]

What Made This Delta Flight FLIP UPSIDE DOWN in Toronto?

A preliminary report by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada reveals that the Delta Air Lines flight that crashed at Toronto's Pearson International Airport on February 17 was descending at a high rate of speed before its disastrous landing. The flight from Minneapolis, operated by Endeavor Air, had 80 people aboard (76 passengers and 4 crew members). Twenty-one people sustained injuries, with two reported as serious. The report released Thursday did not identify a cause for the crash. According to the report's second-by-second breakdown, 3.6 seconds before touchdown, the plane's descent rate increased significantly. A second later, the enhanced ground proximity warning system triggered a "sink rate" alert. Just 1.6 seconds before touchdown, the aircraft was "slightly below the glide slope" - the system guiding controlled descent to the runway. When the right main landing gear contacted the runway, it […]
