Seoul Blanketed by Heaviest November Snowstorm in Over a Century

South Korea’s capital, Seoul, was hit by a record-breaking snowstorm on Wednesday, bringing transportation to a standstill, causing power outages, and leading to at least two fatalities. The snowstorm, the heaviest in November since records began in 1907, dumped over 20 centimeters of snow in parts of the city, surpassing the previous November record set in 1972.

The intense snowfall, attributed to a significant temperature difference between the sea surface and cold air, affected other regions of South Korea as well, including the central, eastern, and southwestern parts of the country.

Youn Ki-han, director of Seoul’s Meteorology Forecast Division, explained that the unusually warm sea surface temperatures in recent weeks contributed to the intensity of the snowfall. Strong westerly winds carried the snow into the Seoul metropolitan area, leading to significant accumulation.

The snowstorm caused widespread disruption, with hundreds of flights canceled or delayed and ferry services to islands suspended. Icy roads led to severe traffic congestion in Seoul, and emergency crews responded to numerous incidents, including fallen trees and safety hazards.

Residents were urged to avoid driving and outdoor activities and to be cautious of falling debris. Thousands of households in Seoul experienced power outages due to the storm.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol instructed relevant authorities to mobilize resources to minimize damage and inconvenience to the public. The snowstorm serves as a reminder of the potential impact of extreme weather events and the importance of preparedness and safety measures.

Ferry services to and from Holyhead Port have resumed after being disrupted for over six weeks due to damage sustained during Storm Darragh in early December. The storm caused significant damage to terminals 3 and 5 at the Welsh port, with terminal 5 operating on a temporary basis upon reopening.   The Irish Ferries ship WB Yeats arrived in Dublin Port from Holyhead this morning, marking the resumption of services. However, the initial restart was not without problems. Ger Hyland, President of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA), reported a three-hour delay for the second ferry from Dublin to Holyhead due to an electrical fault at the port. Hyland expressed concern about the port's readiness, citing the large backlog of freight on the Welsh side. He emphasized the potential for "huge disaster" for the haulage sector, passengers, and Ireland's imports […]

Conor McGregor Named in Civil Lawsuit Alleging Sexual Assault at NBA Finals

Conor McGregor, the mixed martial arts fighter and former UFC champion, is facing a civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault at the Kaseya Center (formerly FTX Arena and American Airlines Arena) in Miami during the NBA Finals on June 9, 2023. The plaintiff alleges that McGregor assaulted her in a bathroom at the venue and is seeking unspecified damages from both McGregor and the Miami Heat Limited Partnership, the arena's ownership group.   McGregor has denied the allegations through a spokesperson, dismissing them as a "shakedown." While the Miami Police Department initiated an investigation following a report filed on June 11, 2023, the Florida State Attorneyโ€™s Office declined to file criminal charges in October 2023. This declination does not preclude the pursuit of a civil suit, which has a different standard of proof than criminal proceedings.   The lawsuit also details […]

Freshwater Crisis Threatens World’s Lithium Supply as Demand Set to Skyrocket 40x

Freshwater, critical for lithium mining, is becoming increasingly scarce in the "Lithium Triangle," a resource-rich region in the Andean Plateau spanning parts of Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile that contains over half of global lithium reserves. A recent study published in Communications Earth and Environment revealed that freshwater availability for lithium extraction in the region is approximately 10 times lower than previously estimated. With global lithium demand projected to increase 40-fold by 2040, the limited annual rainfall supplying freshwater to the arid Lithium Triangle may not be sufficient. The study's authors advise the lithium industry to reduce freshwater consumption to prevent disruption to mining operations, which currently use up to 500,000 gallons of water to extract one ton of lithium. In the Triangle, freshwater supports agricultural activities for Indigenous communities and sustains wetlands housing unique wildlife, including short-tailed chinchillas, wild camelids, […]
