Israel and Hezbollah Agree to Ceasefire in Lebanon After Months of Conflict

Article arrow_drop_down

After months of deadly clashes, Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah have reached a ceasefire agreement, bringing a temporary halt to the intense fighting that erupted in September. The truce, brokered by the US and France, aims to restore calm and stability to the region.

The ceasefire, which came into effect on Wednesday, involves a 60-day period during which both Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants will withdraw from southern Lebanon. The deal also stipulates the removal of Hezbollah fighters and weapons from the area south of the Litani River, to be replaced by Lebanese government forces.

The conflict, which stemmed from the ongoing Israel-Gaza war, escalated significantly in September following the deaths of several Hezbollah leaders. The fighting has resulted in over 3,760 casualties in Lebanon, many of them civilians.

While the ceasefire does not directly impact the Israel-Gaza conflict, it marks a significant step towards de-escalation in the region. The US and France, who played key roles in brokering the deal, have expressed hope that it will lead to a permanent cessation of hostilities.

However, both sides remain cautious. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that Israel will resume strikes if Hezbollah violates the terms of the agreement, while Hezbollah has emphasized its commitment to defending Lebanon against Israeli aggression.

The international community has welcomed the ceasefire, with India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressing hope that it will lead to peace and stability in the region. The focus now shifts to ensuring the full implementation of the agreement and exploring avenues for a lasting resolution to the broader conflict.

Ferry services to and from Holyhead Port have resumed after being disrupted for over six weeks due to damage sustained during Storm Darragh in early December. The storm caused significant damage to terminals 3 and 5 at the Welsh port, with terminal 5 operating on a temporary basis upon reopening.   The Irish Ferries ship WB Yeats arrived in Dublin Port from Holyhead this morning, marking the resumption of services. However, the initial restart was not without problems. Ger Hyland, President of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA), reported a three-hour delay for the second ferry from Dublin to Holyhead due to an electrical fault at the port. Hyland expressed concern about the port's readiness, citing the large backlog of freight on the Welsh side. He emphasized the potential for "huge disaster" for the haulage sector, passengers, and Ireland's imports […]

Conor McGregor Named in Civil Lawsuit Alleging Sexual Assault at NBA Finals

Conor McGregor, the mixed martial arts fighter and former UFC champion, is facing a civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault at the Kaseya Center (formerly FTX Arena and American Airlines Arena) in Miami during the NBA Finals on June 9, 2023. The plaintiff alleges that McGregor assaulted her in a bathroom at the venue and is seeking unspecified damages from both McGregor and the Miami Heat Limited Partnership, the arena's ownership group.   McGregor has denied the allegations through a spokesperson, dismissing them as a "shakedown." While the Miami Police Department initiated an investigation following a report filed on June 11, 2023, the Florida State Attorneyโ€™s Office declined to file criminal charges in October 2023. This declination does not preclude the pursuit of a civil suit, which has a different standard of proof than criminal proceedings.   The lawsuit also details […]

Trump Calls on Putin to “STOP” After Deadly Attack on Kyiv

Russia launched a massive overnight strike against Kyiv, killing at least 12 people in what officials described as the largest attack on the Ukrainian capital this year. The assault prompted an unusual public rebuke from Donald Trump, who directly addressed the Russian president with "Vladimir, STOP!" The attack, which Trump called "not necessary" and "very bad timing" as he pursues peace negotiations, injured 90 people, damaged buildings, and ignited fires across the city. Rescue workers were still recovering bodies from the rubble more than 12 hours later. This strike comes at a critical juncture in Russia's war in Ukraine, which began with Moscow's full-scale invasion in 2022. Trump Criticizes Zelenskyy as Ukraine Peace Talks Falter

President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for allegedly impeding peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. In a Truth Social post, Trump described Zelenskyy's refusal to recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea as "very harmful" to achieving peace, claiming a deal was "very close." "It's inflammatory statements like Zelenskyy's that make it so difficult to settle this War," Trump wrote. Zelenskyy has consistently rejected ceding Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014. "There's nothing to discuss here," he stated at a recent media conference. "This is against our constitution." High-level negotiations aimed at pausing hostilities recently collapsed after Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff withdrew from planned London talks, diminishing Kyiv's hopes for a short-term agreement. Despite this setback, President Trump's Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, was still scheduled to meet with Ukrainian presidential chief […]

The U.S. military characterized the operation as an effort to cut off a fuel source for the Houthi militant group.
