The Nigerian federal government has reported significant progress in its counterterrorism efforts, with over 200 suspected terrorists convicted during a recent judicial process. The Phase 6 Terrorism Trials, conducted from December 9 to 13, 2024, at the Kainji Detention Facility, built upon previous efforts that saw 125 convictions in July 2024.
According to a statement from the National Counter Terrorism Centre, a total of 237 cases were heard during the recent trials. The judicial proceedings resulted in a range of sentences, including death penalties, life imprisonment, and prison terms spanning 20 to 70 years.
The trials targeted individuals accused of various terrorist activities, including attacks on civilians, destruction of religious sites, and abductions. Notably, those involved in terrorism financing were also sentenced, with life imprisonment handed down to some individuals.
Five Federal High Court judges presided over the trials, which were conducted in alignment with international justice standards. The process involved collaboration between the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation and the National Counter Terrorism Centre.
The government emphasized that these trials are critical to restoring peace and stability in affected regions. Officials highlighted the comprehensive approach, which includes both legal proceedings and broader counterterrorism strategies.
The President Bola Tinubu-led administration claims to have strengthened institutional capacities, including those of the military, police, intelligence, law enforcement agencies, and the judiciary, to facilitate more effective justice administration.
While the trials demonstrate a significant judicial response to terrorist activities, the government stressed its commitment to protecting citizens’ rights and maintaining a transparent legal process.

Judge Threatens Criminal Contempt Charges Against Trump Officials Over Deportations
A federal judge has indicated that Trump administration officials could face criminal contempt charges for allegedly violating his order to halt deportations of Venezuelan migrants accused of gang membership. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg in Washington found "probable cause" for criminal contempt charges, stating the administration showed "willful disregard" for his March 15 order that prohibited deporting alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act. Attorneys and relatives of many deportees claim they aren't gang members and were denied opportunities to challenge the government's allegations. The ruling represents the most significant judicial suggestion of potential punishment since President Trump returned to office on January 20, intensifying tensions between the judicial and executive branches. "It's a very strong rebuke to the administration and opens the door for further proceedings to determine who, in fact, disregarded the […]

McIlroy’s 2025 Season: What Could Surpass His Masters Triumph?
Even after the incredible drama of his career Grand Slam-completing Masters victory, Rory McIlroy's 2025 golf season still holds numerous possibilities that could potentially match that memorable achievement. McIlroy is scheduled to return to competition next week in New Orleans, where he and close friend Shane Lowry will defend their Zurich Classic title, an event that doesn't award world ranking points. The Northern Irishman's Augusta triumph significantly reduced Scottie Scheffler's world rankings lead from 4.18 to 2.81 points, though the world number one still maintains a comfortable advantage. The duo has established a considerable gap ahead of third-ranked Xander Schauffele, the reigning Open and US PGA champion, who trails McIlroy by 3.76 points. With McIlroy skipping this week's RBC Heritage in South Carolina, Scheffler, who finished just three strokes behind in fourth place at Augusta despite not being in serious […]

Parent Arrested After Bringing Firearm to Elementary School and Sending Threatening Messages to Teacher
An Indiana mother faces charges after allegedly bringing a gun to her daughter's elementary school and sending threatening messages to the sixth-grade teacher following a disagreement over a classroom assignment. Carrie Rivers, 48, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property and harassment related to an incident at Valley Mills Elementary School in Indianapolis. According to the arrest affidavit, Rivers confronted her daughter's teacher about "a work assignment that had to do with same-sex relationships." When Decatur Township School Police officers responded to a call about an "irate parent," they noticed Rivers had what appeared to be a firearm on her waistband. Officer Tabetha Emenaker stated in the affidavit that upon removing the weapon, "Carrie Rivers stated that she did have a gun." The officer informed Rivers that having a firearm on school grounds was illegal, […]

US Congressional Watchdog to Investigate Changes at the SEC
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) will examine recent changes at the Securities and Exchange Commission, including those potentially influenced by the White House or Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), according to a letter sent to Democratic lawmakers. The GAO, Congress's nonpartisan research arm, informed Senators Elizabeth Warren and Mark Warner that it will review the SEC's recent efforts to reduce staff, terminate leases, and consolidate operations, as detailed in an April 8 letter viewed by Reuters. The lawmakers requested the investigation last month following media reports about DOGE's involvement and other significant changes at the market regulator. A. Nicole Clowers, managing director of GAO's congressional relations office, confirmed in the letter that the request "is within the scope of (GAO's) authority" and that work would commence in approximately three months. Since President Donald Trump took office and […]

Supreme Court Rules Trans Women Can Be Excluded From Single Sex Spaces
A UK Supreme Court ruling has determined that the terms "woman" and "sex" in the 2010 Equality Act refer specifically to biological women and biological sex, allowing transgender women with gender recognition certificates (GRCs) to be excluded from single-sex spaces if deemed "proportionate." The judgment states that providers of single-sex facilities, including changing rooms, homeless hostels, and medical services, would face "practical difficulties" if "sex" were interpreted more broadly than biological sex in the legislation. Campaigners suggest this ruling could significantly impact sports and single-sex spaces such as changing rooms and hospital wards across the UK. Transgender advocacy groups have expressed concern about the decision. In a statement, one organization warned: "Any ruling which excludes and limits personal freedoms, access and participation in society, and recognition in the eyes of the law impacts us all." They noted that "trans women […]

Trade War Showdown Who Will Surrender First Trump Or Xi
The escalating trade war between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping has rattled global markets, leaving many wondering which leader will back down first. Trump has imposed a massive 145-percent tariff on Chinese imports, with China retaliating with a 125-percent duty. On Tuesday, Trump ordered a national security review of critical mineral imports, mostly sourced from China. Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported China directed its airlines to halt Boeing jet deliveries and stop purchasing aircraft parts from US companies, while Hong Kong's postal service suspended US-bound mail. "A 145-percent tariff will make it impossible for China to sell to the US โ the costs on both economies will be exceptionally high," said Vina Nadjibulla from the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. "A complete decoupling is almost impossible to contemplate." Experts question whether Trump's administration has clear objectives beyond his […]

Trump Administration Sues Maine Over Transgender Athletes In Women’s Sports
The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against Maine for refusing to prohibit transgender athletes from competing in women's sports, escalating an ongoing conflict between President Trump and Governor Janet Mills. "The Department of Justice will not sit by when women are discriminated against in sports," declared US Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday. "This is also about these young women's personal safety." Governor Mills responded that the issue has "never been about school sports of the protection of women and girls," accusing the federal government of "imposing its will" on states. The legal dispute centers on Title IX, a civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational programs. In February, Trump signed an executive order requiring that Title IX be interpreted to ban transgender women and girls from female sports competitions. According to the federal government, Maine's education […]
